Prayer Pt. 1

Matthew 6:5–13 ESV
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Verses 5-9

Verse 5-8: Pray like its just you and Jesus
Rewards or fruit will follow your prayer
If you Pray for others’ praise, you get praise, If you pray for Jesus, you get intimacy with Jesus
Its about intimacy.
Thats what you crave, or will crave as you near high school and college. To know and be known by others.
He knows you so well that he knows what you need.
Verse 9
The title was new with Jesus
Jesus always used this address in prayer
He gave his disciples permission to use it
God is Holy, but not far away anymore. He is sacred but yet intimate.
1. How do you feel about God right now? Do you feel like God is far away or near? Describe that a little.
2. Does prayer effect the way you feel about God? Does it make you feel closer to him?
3. Does it seem like most people sound like they are reciting a King James Bible when they pray in public? Should we pray like that, so formal?
4. We will talk a lot about Hope at DNOW. As we start praying, how can we pray for you, your prayer life, your hope in God, and just life in general?

Prayer Pt. 2

Verse 10-15a

Verse 10
Your prayers reveal your perspective on life
They reveal whats most important to you.
The most best thing for earth would be for heaven to be here
Verse 11
Just because our needs arent first, they are still important
God cares about your body, so you should too.
Body health
Body image
Verse 12
Our ability to forgive others is directly affected by our understanding and belief in the gospel
We can see how well we understand and believe the gospel by seeing how we forgive others.
Pray for forgiveness and ability to forgive others
Verse 13
Specifically for deliverance from the tempter, satan.
These questions will be yes or no if you let them. You will probably have to push them to think through the principles and to give a little more on their answers.
1. Casey talked about our prayers revealing a lot about us. Anyone want to be honest about what their prayer life reveals? (ex. only worried about material things, concerned with the kingdom of God, or maybe a lack of prayer life reveals lack of belief in God)
2. Is it selfish to pray for ourselves? Do you think God is concerned with your health or body image? Why?
3. Have you ever considered that you should pray for your physical, mental, and emotional health, for good body image and confidence, so that you will be healthy to do ministry and to serve God better? What difference would that make in your lives?
4. Do you forgive others easily? Have you ever thought about your ability to forgive others being related to your prayer life? Tell me more...
5. Do you agree with Casey’s statement that the ability to forgive is directly related to being forgiven and that you can tell how well a person understands and believes the gospel based on how well they forgive?
6. How can we be praying for you? ( you may want to really dig in here and get them to give prayer request that involve DNOW and hope, forgiving others, praying for their physical health, and praying for deliverance from temptation. Hopefully this is a really awesome prayer time for your group and will lead to a great DNOW!

Exegete

Matthew 6:5–13 ESV

Matthew 6:5–8 ESV
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. Ryle says the driving point to Jesus’s talk here is that Prayer is about getting alone with God (JC Ryle, Matthew, p39)
As i contemplate that thought, it makes so much sense. When we pray alone, we are driving for this. When we pray in public, obviously its more public in nature, but even then, the mode and motives are the same. Pray like you would when you are alone with God.
I think this is one of the things we can learn about prayer. Pray like its just you and Jesus.
Theres not a lot of things in Christianity that encourage that idea. Its always Jesus and his bride, but in this instance, it is “you and your Jesus”.
Matthew 6:9 ESV
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Boyce reminds me that calling God as father was a new thing. That is unheard of in O.T. Jew life.
Boyce says we learn these three things
The title was new with Jesus
Jesus always used this address in prayer
He gave his disciples permission to use it
(Boyce, Sermon on the Mount Commentary, p 193)
The people of God didn't think of God as a father before Jesus. Thats pretty crazy to me. As much as they saw God work, like in history and before their eyes, they didnt know him very intimately. They literally heard Him speak, yet they didnt know him very well. It makes sense though. Adam brought seperation. It took Jesus coming back to bridge that seperation. It may not have always been an eternal, hell bound seperation, but still physical seperation.
FYI, the pharisees saw a lot of this as blasphamey
God is holy, seperate from all things. He is above and seperate, since Jesus says he is hallowed or holy.
God is also near and intimate.
Matthew 6:10 ESV
10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Whats my number one thing to pray. i think in Las Vegas, i prayed a lot for provision and for particular people to come to faith. Here, i seem to pray a lot for health. Thats a little bizarre to me. Why did i change?
Perspective.
I think the sermon needs to drive our perspective here. We can see our perspective in our prayers.
Are we first and formost consumed with the kingdom of God?
The greatest and best thing to happen on Earth is for it to be like heaven! Lets light this thing up and start the revolution!!!!
Matthew 6:11 ESV
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
It shows that we are also ok to pray for provision. That isnt selfish. We cannot obey the orders of God and carry out his mission if we are crippled by need.
If you are going to be a missionary, remember this!
If God cares for your body, then you should too!
Matthew 6:12 ESV
12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Jesus talks about forgiveness in many places. I think pride drives the urge to not forgive. God’s grace drives forgiveness. I am convinced that you can tell how well someone understands the gospel and believes it by how well they forgive!!!
We should ask for that understanding and power to forgive others as we ask for forgiveness for our sins.
Matthew 6:13 ESV
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Many scholars think that this is saying specifically, God deliver us from the temptor. This is not deliver us from our sinful desires. This is not God dont tempt us. Its God deliver us from the one that will try to tempt us; I.E. the devil.
Alexandria Scripts dont put the last ending - thine is the kingdom and power and glory forever amen. Ill probably leave this off in sermon.
