Opening and Prayer-
Introduce myself
Statement of purpose:
Remember Johnny and honor his memory.
Receive comfort from one another and from the Lord.
Give thanks to God for life- Johnny’s and our own.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
Before prayer, be sure to inform everyone that there will be a time later in the service to share positive and encouraging words about Johnny.
Obituary- Adam
Song #1- “Go Rest High on that Mountain” (Vince Gill)
Scripture Passage-
A Psalm of David.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
Eulogy- Do you have an encouraging story about Johnny
Song #2- “Outskirts of Heaven” (Craig Campbell)
Message-
One of the honors I have as a pastor is to learn about the lives of loved ones as their family and friends remember them.
I did not know Johnny before he passed, but I’ve enjoyed hearing your stories today. I’ve enjoyed sitting with the family and hearing them talk about their husband, dad, and friend. I can tell that you all loved Johnny very much. I know that you will miss him very much.
Johnny was man devoted to his friends and family.
He served in the airforce to defend the God-given liberties we enjoy here in America.
It was during his time in the service that he met Shawna and they were married in 1999. After Tinker, Johnny got on with OG&E @ Horseshoe Lake.
When I asked Shawna how did you (being from Minnesota) and Johnny (being from Texas) decide to live in Harrah, America? She said, they just never left :)
So they made Harrah home. Harrah was where they had work, they started their family, they had their house and their shop (which I’ve heard is of gigantic proportions).
Life in Harrah has been good. It has been the intersection of family, community, work, and recreation
Johnny loved hunting.
He loved fourwheeling.
He loved working on CJ-7s with friends from work.
But he loved his family most of all. Softball and baseball were where showed his devotion to his kids.
Softball brought the family to games in Myrtle Beach, New Orleans, Nashville, and many other exciting cities.
By logging all these miles for softball, Johnny spent countless hours with his kids. You know kids spell love t-i-m-e.
Also, through softball Johnny picked up some wonderful friends. He and Adam spent many hours discussing the quality of the reffing at the games. The story has it that Johnny helped Adam learn how to be civil, tactful, and polite in how he addressed the umpires (right? :) ).
A lot of friendships were formed.
In baseball, Johnny loved to work on catching and pitching with Jake. They’d go out to the shop and throw the ball (Did I mention they have a large shop?)
Times like these made Jake feel loved. Also when his dad helped him with his math homework.
Johnny gave his friends and family the best of himself.
If you were friend or family, there was little, if anything, that he would keep from you. He was immensely generous.
He was described by those closest to him as a gentle giant. He was eager to be a helper.
In fact, whenever he and Shawna went back to Minnesota to visit Rick and Linda, he hardly sat around the house. Instead he was always helping with tasks around the house.
Maybe this was his go-to excuse to stay warm in the house and get out of ice fishing? :)
Johnny was loved and will be missed.
The family said that over the last week there have been a lot of tears, but also a lot of laughter. When family comes together, they bring comfort and love to one another.
This is part of God’s plan, that families comfort one another in their grief.
God also uses friends to bring comfort. I’ve been impressed with some of the actions of Johnny’s friends to care for the family during this painful time. Just as Johnny was so generous with his friends while living, his friends are repaying that kindness to his family in his death. That is something which gives peace in the heart.
There is one other source of comfort according to God’s design- himself. When we suffer loss, there are some parts of the heart which cannot be reached by the comforts of friends and family.
These parts are the ones that hurt late at night when we are all alone and feel most hopeless and helpless.
God has comfort to give in these spaces in our hearts. There’s a peace He can give that no one else can.
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
This verse talks about a peace which goes beyond our ability to comprehend. It sounds so perfect. It makes sense that if God made us, then He knows perfectly well how to comfort our hearts and satisfy our needs. This is a gift He grants.
Along with this is His capability to help you in your anxiety.
I’m sure there are a lot of anxieties on your hearts and minds right now. When you lose a spouse, father, and friend, anxiety is natural.
God offers help, calm, and peace in the midst of your pain.
How to get all of this? He gives it generously to His children who believe.
How do you become a child of the Lord? Scripture tells us that if
Admit our sin separates us from God and His blessings
Believe that God sent Jesus from heaven to earth to die for our sins and that He rose from the dead.
Call on Jesus as Savior and Lord
Then God will forgive us our sins
He will adopt us as His children
He will give us eternal life
He will meet us in our lives here and now- giving us the peace mentioned earlier.
I’d enjoy visiting with you more about this sometime if this is something you’d like to do.
Johnny has great friends and family. You are all a gift to one another. I pray that you all will build each other up and support each other during this very difficult time.
