Psalms 150
Psalms 150
I love Mondays…
We have been dealing with Prayer
We understand why God’s word is so important
and we will dive deeper into why meditation is so vital to our spiritual success
#1 Music has power
Numerous scientific and psychological studies have shown that music can lift our moods, combat depression, improve blood flow in ways similar to statins, lower levels of stress-related hormones and ease pain.
#2 Physical movement is throughout the Bible
clapping & dancing
singing
playing of instruments
Today I want deal the importance of expressing our praise to God
Psalms 150 - Verse 1 deals with “where” to praise him
Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens!
“Praise the Lord”
This is not a greeting!
Praise: Hallelujah - It’s a Hebrew command to praise YA or Yaweh
“Praise God in his Sanctuary”
Praise (religious) v. — to extol the greatness of a deity or the deity’s works as an act of worship.
Worship has movement!
Both of the primary words in Hebrew and Greek for worship in the Bible mean the same thing: to bow down or lay one’s face to the ground.
It’s an acknowledgment of God’s glory.
There is someone who is transcendent and glorious and He is worthy of our full allegiance and devotion!
Extol: praise enthusiastically
Praise: Express warm approval or admiration\Admire, eulogize; praise; exclaim
Eulogize: praise highly in speech or writing
Sanctuary n. — a consecrated place where the deity dwells and where sacred objects are kept and worship takes place.
In light of the New Covenant, we realize that God’s sanctuary is not fixed to a particular building in Jerusalem.
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
“Mighty Heavens”
The wide expanse of sky, with all its might in storms and weather, is also a fitting place to praise God.
Since the firmament stretches from horizon to horizon, it tells us that God should be praised in every place under the sky
This means I express my approval and admiration for God at anytime and everywhere.
It’s not something I do only on Sundays and only at church.
Verse 2 deals with the “Why” of Praise
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his excellent greatness!
“Praise him for his mighty deeds”
Mighty deeds: accomplishment n. — the action of accomplishing something.
God’s mighty acts are one reason to praise God in every place. He has done great and powerful things
‘O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours?
When I think of the goodness of Jesus!
“Praise him according to his excellent greatness”
Excellent: abundance (property) n. — the property of a more than adequate quantity or supply.
Greatness: (eminence) n. — the property possessed by something or someone of outstanding importance or eminence.
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein,
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Verse 3-5 deals with “How” to Praise Him
Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with sounding cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Trumpet blast were to announce the year of jubilee
Joyous celebrations of victory - You see tambourines and dance
Simple music-making to judge by the everyday associations of the pipe or flute
All instruments can be used to express our thankfulness..
There is power between Music and Movement
Culture plays a major part…
I believe these verses cover all genre of music...
When the Children of Isreal crossed the Red Sea…
Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. And Miriam sang to them:
“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously;
the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!
