Passage

Romans 12:1–2 CSB
1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Message

1. Live out your Worship

Romans 12:1 CSB
1 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.
Up to the point of Christ’s death on the cross, every sacrifice that was made as a form of worship was not with anything living. But, because of His death, we can now worship God with all of our minds, souls, and bodies. Because of God’s mercy and our salvation, everything we say and do should be an act of worship
How would you define worship?
Worship - to regard with great or extravagant respect, honor, or devotion
So in other words, worship is not only singing of God’s glory. Worship also looks like humbling yourself when you pray, it looks like valuing people as Kingdom residents, it looks like spending time reading the bible because it is worth it.
Practically speaking, when I think of someone who worshipped well, I think of David. Primarily because unlike myself, David’s worship and devotion to God was not contingent on the ebb ans flow of his circumstances. David’s worship was constant and never ceasing, much like the God that he worshipped.
Psalm 150:6 CSB
6 Let everything that breathes praise the Lord. Hallelujah!
Luke 19:40 CSB
40 He answered, “I tell you, if they were to keep silent, the stones would cry out.”
I’m sorry, but my lips will not remain silent when it comes to praising my God because He sent his Son Jesus to free me from my prison of sin and my life is fully and completely his. So no, I will not give any other form of creation the opportunity to praise God over me.

2. Don’t Conform to Culture

Romans 12:2 (ESV)
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,
The culture constantly tells us who and what we are supposed to be. But Paul warned the Romans not to be conformed. We cannot fall captive to the lies of the world with their promised satisfaction, status, or superficial attention. The truth is that if we are following Jesus we won’t fit in the world because this isn’t our forever home. We are supposed to stand out as Christ-followers and be set apart from the rest of the world.
For instance, have you ever met someone and you know almost immediately that they aren’t from around here? Think about the different types of accents from around the USA. What are some accents that you can think of?
- Midwest, Louisiana, Boston, Savannah Georgia, Texas.
Just like we can almost alway identify when someone isn’t a local, that is how the world should view us as Christ-followers
Getting to live like earth is our temporary home should challenge us to not get too comfortable with the things that will pass away. I am not going to get comfortable in my sin because that’s not what I am going to be doing for the rest of my life.
Ephesians 4:20–24 CSB
20 But that is not how you came to know Christ, 21 assuming you heard about him and were taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to take off your former way of life, the old self that is corrupted by deceitful desires, 23 to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, the one created according to God’s likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth.
Matthew 5:14–16 CSB
14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
1 Peter 2:9 CSB
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Because we get to be unashamed

3. Renew your mind with Scripture

Romans 12:2 (ESV)
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
If we aren’t supposed to conform to the culture, we have to know the transforming truth of God’s Word. This requires us to spend time in His Word and actually know His truth. So when the culture tells us one thing, we already know what we need to do and how we need to act. God’s Word is the only thing that will keep us aligned with His will for our lives.
What does you personal bible study look like currently?
However you answer that question, you can probably make a direct correlation to how the depth of your relationship with God currently. In other words, how intentional you are in the study of the bible directly impacts all the other areas of your faith.
I like to think of it like this. I want you to think of your best friend. Think about your best friend and just how close you are to them. Hopefully you are pretty tight. Now think about all of the work that goes in to that relationship. Chances are you guys have multiple conversations throughout the day, maybe even through multiple avenues. You could probably tell me what their favorite food is, what their least favorite soda is, their favorite color, favorite sports team, etc. The linchpin to the entire thing is the effort that goes in to pursuing a deep and connected relationship.
With that being said, now I want you to think about your relationship with God. How many times a day do you talk with Him? What are the things that bring Him pleasure and what does He dislike? Do you get where I am going with all this? Luke 12:7 tells us that God knows us so well, that he could tell us the number of hairs on our heads.
Need another reason to lean into God’s word?
Ephesians 6:13–17 CSB
13 For this reason take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. 14 Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, 15 and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. 16 In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God.
God’s word is our only offensive weapon when it comes to battling the enemy. Every other piece of the Armor of God in Ephesians 6 is used for defense. In other words, we are armed with the Word of God to combat the enemy on his turf and in our lives.
If I know what the bible says, I can know things like:
1 John 4:4 CSB
4 You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
Romans 8:37 CSB
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Matthew 7:11 CSB
11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him.

Response

James 1:22 CSB
22 But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
Psalm 119:1–3 (CSB)
1 How happy are those whose way is blameless,
who walk according to the Lord’s instruction!
2 Happy are those who keep his decrees
and seek him with all their heart.
3 They do nothing wrong;
they walk in his ways.
