Intro Story: Story about something I spent a lot of time creating and then destroyed it and started over.
Have you ever created something with your own hands?
I love to create things , I love to think up ideas and then create them with my hands.
when I was a kid a made tree forts in the woods behind our house.
I Man knives and bows and arrows, I made a 22 rifle out of pipes from the shop, i made the flame thrower that caught my yard on fire, I made go karts, ropes swings, and all kinds of other things that a rambunctious boy thought he needed in his life.
I still love to create things.
One of my favorite toys as a young kid was legos
Does anyone here like to play with lego?
I would sit for hours with my legos and build cities, and cars and everything else I could think of.
But do you know what the best thing about legos is?
The book of John is all about Jesus
This morning we are going to see Christ as the Word .
Not only does our text this morning describe Jesus as the word but also as the creator God,
The reason we need to see Christ as the Word is because it took Christ with all of his deity to pay the ransom for our sin.
`BIG IDEA; OUR IMPERFECTIONS REQUIRED CHRIST PERFECTION.
TEXT John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
2 Questions Our text will answer for us this morning
2 Questions Our text will answer for us this morning
#1 Who is Jesus?
#1 Who is Jesus?
3 statements about who jesus Is
Christ [is] the Self Existent One
John waste no time in establishing the eternal nature of Christ. in the very first verse He declares “ In the Beginning was the Word”
Text John 1:1-4 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
the first statement about who Jesus is from our text is “ In the Beginning was the Word.
We know that when John is speaking of “The Word” he is referring to Jesus Christ.
In fact John calls Jesus “ the Word six times in his new testament books, including the Gospel of John chapter 1, 1 John 1:1 and in Revelation19:13
the name “The Word “translated into Greek is Logos-
John proclaims the deity of Christ by using the word "logos” as His name, Logos was used in the Old Testament to describe the law and wisdom of God,
The Name “Logos” carries with it, the divine wisdom manifest in the creation, government, and redemption of the world, and from John’s writing s it is identified as the second person of the Trinity- Jesus Christ.
Text John 1:1-4 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
Do you notice the parallelism from John 1 to genesis 1. both give an account of Creation.
but while they are very similar there is a distinction we need to see before we move
Genesis begins “in the Beginning God created”
Genesis begins with the Creation of the world, with the beginning of time.
In Genesis 1:14 we see God bring time into existence with the creat of light and darkness, day and night.
But notice where John begins his description of Jesus.
Jesus existed before time-
John reaches back before creation and says there was God-
Creation isn’t mentioned until verse 3. This means that the first 2 verses of John one are about eternity before creation.
John say “ in the beginning WAS the word
John uses the greek verb en which we translate as was to describe Jesus’ nature before creation.
This greek word EN carries with it the idea of a continous existance.
John chose to use this word en instead of the more common word egeneto which means something from the past. Something bound by time to describe Jesus nature in eternity past.
Notice Jesus wasn’t there alone in eternity past. John gives us another statement about Who Jesus is
Christ [is] the Coexistent One
Text:In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God”
John tells us that The Word and God the Father were together in eternity past.
He uses the greek word pros to describe this relationship with God.
this word carries the idea of motion towards one another,. it describes an intimate relationship together. Communion one with another.
This carries the idea that Jesus the WORD and God the father had a face to face relationship with one another.
Christ was not only in eternity past but he was in communion with God.
Trans.: John now gives us his third direct statement about Christ.
John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Christ [is] the Equally existent One
Text:In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,”
This means that everything that can be said about God can be said about Jesus.
Every characteristic of God is equally a characteristic of Jesus.
We call this the Trinity- The belief that there is One God- but that this one God exists in three persons: God the Father, Jesus the Son, and God the H.S.
John Beautifully and simply builds the case of Jesus’ Deity in verse one.
Jesus existed before time and creation, He has eternally existed as the 2nd person in the triune God. Jesus has always been in in full communion with God,.because Jesus is God himself.
Trans: and just to make sure that we as the reader didn’t miss the point he sums it all up in verse 2
Text :In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” 2 he was in the beginning with God”
Did you get it - Jesus as the second person in the self existent triune God moving from Jesus in eternity past to proclaim Jesus as the Creator.
(MAYBE WRITE ABOUT WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT TO BE LEIVE JESUS IS GOD not just a god - Jahovah Witnesses)
SG question— why is it important to believe that JEsus is the God and not just a god?
Christ the Creator
text: John 1:3 “All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
John in this 3rd verse proclaims Christ as the creator of all.
Everything we can see with our naked eye. everything we discover through telescopes in the universe and even the smallest cells we study with microscopes.
There is nothing in existence today that Jesus did not create.
Again there is so much parallelism between our text in john one and genesis one.
Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
John 1:3 “All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
When it comes to creation Jesus wasn’t just present, but he was active in all creation.
There is nothing in existence today or in anytime in the past that Jesus did not create.
Have you ever stopped and marveled at the intricacy of His creation?
the details inside of the details.
2 years ago my family went to vail Colorado for vacation , a little village nestled in a valley between a vast mountain range. One of our goals was to climb to the peak of a 12,000 ft mountain. We began to climb in the early Morning. for the first 2 1/2 hours all we saw was a whole lot of pines as we wound our way up the trail though the forest. But the higher we hiked up that mountain the fewer and fewer tress there were to block our view. Eventually we left the trees behind and in our view was the peak of the mountain and even though we could see it, it was still a long ways away. We continued to climb for another 3 hours, stopping often to drink from the crystal clear water flowing from the mountain. Eventually after 5 1’2 hours of climbing We reached the summit, and as we stood atop the peak we could see The majestic mountains springing forth from the valleys below. All I could think about is how beautiful God’s creation is.
From the Giant Elephant herds that roam the African plain to the a colony of ants where each one has his own job to do and does it perfectly. Jesus Created all of it!
Paul describes this creation in Col.1:16 “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”
Do you see the point that John and Paul both are making?
Jesus Christ is the creator of all, and all things are created for Him.
Revelation 4:11 tells us that Jesus will one day be worshiped by creation They will shout praises and “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
John in the first 4 verses of the gospel gives us the answer to the question Who is Jesus
Jesus is the self existent God. He has no beginning and he will have no end. He has eternally existed as the 2nd person in the triune God for all eternity. And this means that he has always been in full communion with God the father and God the Holy Spirit. He is not a distant God but is intimately involved with all creation because He is the creator God.
THATS WHO JESUS IS!
Transition: so in light of this fundamental truth that Jesus is the Creator God we must ask ourselves the second question
#2 Why did Jesus come to earth?
#2 Why did Jesus come to earth?
Have you ever stopped to contemplate the conversations people would have been having when they heard John the Baptist declare that this Jewish carpenter from Nazareth was God himself?
If this carpenter is truly God then why is her here?
Why would he the supreme creator want to come to the earth He created?
and why would a king want to come as lowly carpenter?
Why would he want to leave His home of perfection and come be part of our imperfections?
Thea real question that many people would have been asking is the same question we need to ask.
What was the point in Jesus coming to earth?
John in our text this morning Gives us two reasons why Jesus chose to come to earth.
John 1:4-5 “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
Why did jesus come to earth? because He is Life and Light.
JESUS Brings LIFE
The Bible is very clear when it describes mankind without God.
In Ephesians chapter 2 verse 1 Eph 2:1 “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins.
Without Jesus in your life you are dead.
Last year as we did a study through the old testament the term death is abundant when it comes to the story of mankind.
We learned over and over again that death means seperation.
When we go to funeral to mourn someone we love. We are mourning the seperation that we now experience from our loved one. When we walk up to the casket and look inside, we see there physical body laying there, but the person we knew and loved is already gone.
This is physical death - The seperation of soul from the body
Ephesians 1 is not talking about physical death but spiritual death
because of the sin in our life our soul has been condemned to be separated from God forever.
All Humanity faces this sad predicament. We are dead in our sin. WE ARE NOT morally Good. We are not neutrally okey. WE are Totally dead- We have been separated from God because of our sin for all eternity. And we need a miracle that to bring us life..
We need life to be breathed into our dead souls.
John 14:6 “Jesus proclaims himself as the only solution to our dilemma , “I am the way, and the truth, and I AM the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Jesus is saying “I am the only source of life… the only way for any of us to have life is through Jesus. “
The only way for any of us to come to God is through Jesus,
John Gives us another Reason why Jesus had to come to rescue us himself.
Jesus Brings Light
John 1:4-5“In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Illustration; Belize Cave.
Amy and I love to travel to the Caribbean- One time while in the central American country of Belize . we decided to take an offroad 4 wheeler tour through the jungles that ended at an ancient cave deep in the Jungle.
This cave was so hidden that even when I was 10 feet in front of It I had no idea it was there. The opening to get into the cave was about 3 inches narrower than my belly and it took a little squeezing to get in. Once we squeezed through the 12 ft long narrow passage the cave began to open up.
We began to walk through the tunnels of this cave. Everyone of us had our own light. and with all 10 of our light s shining brightly the cave was lit up beautifully.
Eventually we came to another small opening and one by one we all crawled through it, and on the other side of this small tunnel was a giant room hidden from the world.
We were deep inside this cave. and I was glad we had someone with us who knew how to get out Because I was lost on my own.
As we took a break inside this room the tour guide said “ have any of you ever really felt total darkness?
In my mind I thought “I’ve had been in the dark before.” Ive walked in the basement with out any lights on before. Ive been in places where I couldn’t see anything.
The guide said let me show you what complete darkness feels like.
One by one we each shut our lanterns off. and in that moment we could feel the weight of total darkness in our life.
we could feel The coldness of the darkness
We could feel the loneliness of the darkness
We could feel the desperation of being completely lost without any chance of escape.
It was eerie sense of complete hopelessness.
As we sat there in utter darkness looking for any glimmer of light , the tour guide took out a small candle and turned it on.
and do you know what happened in that moment- the coldness of darkness began to fade away.
the loneliness began to dissolve
and the desperation from being lost was no more.
Why - Because that little light pushed back all of the darkness upon us, and life became alive around us.
We could see! The darkness that enslaved us was gone,
Ephesians 5:8 “for at one time you were darkness,
Without Jesus we all are not just in darkness but we are consumed with darkness.
We have no hope
We have no way of escape
Because of sin mankind is so deep into darkness that no matter how hard we may try to see light there is none to be found.
we cannot escape the coldness of darkness ,
we cannot escape the loneliness of darkness
Because none of us have the ability to produce light because we are ALL in complete darkness.
and this is why Jesus had to come to earth
It takes the self existent God because anything less cannot produce light
He alone is the source of light
he alone is the one who can bring us life.
Jesus says “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12
Jesus Christ came to earth to be the light in the darkness of your sin
without the light of Christ man would still seeking a way of escape
without the light of Christ man is still in the coldness of darkness
without the light of Christ man is still in hopeless.
and without the light of Christ man cannot be rescued by God
Jesus Brought light to the spiritual darkness so that that he could bring life to the spiritually dead.
He came to earth to show mankind the way to reconciliation with God.
THE GOOD NEWS
THE GOOD NEWS
The gospel of Jesus is the good news that you no longer have to stay dead in darkness without hope, but can now have life in the Light.
The question that each of us must ask ourselves is “how can I receive spiritual life?”
By placing your trust in Christ alone through Faith Alone.
To trust Christ alone means that you no longer rely on your own self to be good enough for God to accept, but instead you put all your faith in Him to save you.
understand this true faith in Christ means There is no safety net to fall back on.
Jesus says in John 11:25 -26 “Jesus said , “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
To trust Christ means to believe that he alone has the power to pay your debt of sin in full.
Its’ to believe that He loves us so much that he was willing come to earth to be the light so that we could see the darkness of sin that condemns each of us to hell.
When you trust Christ as your Savior
You go from death to life- Yo are no longer separated from God
You go from darkness to light- you no longer live without any hope condemned to hell, because you are now redeemed by the light of the World with a full inheritance in heaven.
When you trust Christ as your savior, He takes God’s judgement for your sins, and in return he gives you his victory over death.
The Bible tells us that anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
In order for you to go from eternally dead to eternally alive you need Life- and Jesus is the way the truth and the Life”
Will receive life today?
Bring it Home
Bring it Home
Why Did Jesus have to come to earth?
- Because He is the only solution that can pay your debt of sin and bring you from death to life.
- Because anything short of HIS perfect light would still leave us in darkness.
- because His love for us, as his prize creation, was so great that there was nothing he wouldn’t do to redeem us and make us his own.
Invitation;
Believe
If you are here this morning and have never accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, than you are still in darkness today- you are still dead in your sins today.
The Bible tells us that any one who does not trust in Jesus will spend an eternity separated from God forever and the Only Solution to this dilemma is Belief in Jesus Alone
Jesus came to earth for you.- He wants to take your debt of sin and pay it in full and give you life. He wants to redeem you.
What is it in your life that is keeping you from completely trusting in Jesus today?
Whatever it is, you have to ask yourself is it worth the cost of being separated from the God who loved mr enough to die in my place, forever.
Don’t wait any longer- look to the Light of Jesus, trust him today.
BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST SO THAT YOU WILL BE SAVED!
