Introduction

Greetings…
Mary, the mother of Jesus typically falls between two extremes and both are wrong.
By that I mean there are those on one hand that deify her, making her one to pray to and almost on par with God himself.
On the other hand there are those that will talk about every other faithful woman in the bible but not Mary.
As one many put it, “they are more interesting in the ‘virgin birth’ than the virgin.”
Mary was not divine but she was the mother chosen by God to raise the Messiah.
Luke 1:26–29 ESV
26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.
Luke 1:30–33 ESV
30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:34–38 ESV
34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
With this in mind let us examine the heart of Mary, the mother of the Messiah.
Mary had…

A Pure Heart

The Virgin Mary.

If the Son of God isn’t pure he is illegitimate and thus we find the need for not just a virgin to be conceived in but one of great faith in her God.
When we look back at what we just read a moment ago there are so many great attributes given about Mary and her pure heart.
Mary was a virgin.
No less than three times in just a handful of verses is this fact mentioned.
Luke 1:27 (ESV)
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.
Luke 1:34 (ESV)
34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”
In today’s society virginity i.e., one that has not has sexes yet, is a rare thing indeed, even by those in the church unfortunately.
During this time it was no different and so the reality of virginity is something to be praised and Mary is to be remember for, which is why God mentions it so much; whether in prophecy or in the gospel accounts.
Mary was the “favored one.”
Luke 1:28 ESV
28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”
Other translations have “highly favored one.”
The idea being she was God was with her, he was on her side.
Mary wasn’t from a “good town.”
It’s interesting that God chose one from Nazareth.
We remember what Nathanael said about it.
John 1:46 ESV
46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
This simply shows us that “our environment” doesn’t have to dictate our faithfulness.
You can be good even growing up in a town with a bad name.
God chose a good girl from a bad town.
Mary chose to be involved.
When told, every Jewish girls dream to be the mom of the Messiah, she didn’t back down from it she whole hardly accepted it.
Luke 1:38 ESV
38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Mary didn’t back down from the responsibility but rather took it head on.
We will consider her involvement more as we go through the rest of the lesson.

Summary

Mary, the mother God chose to raise his son, was most pure in heart.
What a feat considering everything.
We also can see that Mary had…

A Pondering Heart

Treasured Memories.

After Mary gave birth to the Messiah the only fanfare given was to some local and obviously faithful, shepherds.
And when the shepherds come and see Joseph, Mary, and this little newborn baby Jesus in a manager they tell them all that the angel had told them. This is when we read this about Mary in Luke 2:19.
Luke 2:19 ESV
19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.
This isn’t the only time we find this characteristic of Mary.
After 12 year old Jesus is found in the temple and he responds about “being about his father’s house” we read this in Luke 2:51
Luke 2:51 ESV
51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.

Summary

With every step, with every scrapped knee, with every biblical lesson, Mary was aware that she was teaching the “Son of God.”
The memories Mary must have pondered upon when seeing her child grow up and then become “the Man Christ Jesus.”
That leads us to our last point.
We see Mary had…

A Pierced Heart

Imagine Rearing Jesus.

What an overwhelming responsibility, to rear the Son of God.
It’s mind-boggling to change the diaper, to nurse, to so “no no” to the Son of God as a baby in your arms.
To watch God learn to walk, learn to read, play with other kids…
The bible mentions many of the great men of faith’s parents, “Moses, Samuel, Samson” but Mary raised God!
Not only did she have that responsibility she did so with a stigma.
Remember, she was pregnant before marriage.
Now I want us to…

Imagine Knowing Jesus’ Future.

I’m not talking about her knowing his death but that he is God and not just God but the Messiah.
Mary was raising him whom she would have to eventually bow down to.
When Jesus left home to start his ministry I have no doubt Mary was very proud but then, very shortly after that feeling became one of fear.
Her boy, her son, was being targeted for death teaching what she strove to teach him.
John 7:1 ESV
1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.
Matthew 26:3–4 ESV
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

Summary

Mary, the mother of God, heart was pierced when she watched her son be hung on a cross no doubt.
John 19:25–26 ESV
25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
However, her heart was pierced in a better way when she witnessed her Son’s work come to fruition.
Remember, she was in that upper room with the apostles when she saw all the “tongues” of fire come down on them and witnessed people lining up to obey the “Gospel Of Jesus” (Acts 2:41).

Conclusion

Nothing after Acts 1 is said of Mary.
Like her husband Joseph we know nothing of when or how she passed, but rest assured with one like Mary who had a pure, pondering, and pierced heart she is with her son now awaiting the rest who have submitted like she did to her Son and Savior.
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
