Introduction:
Triage…Jesus’ style?
LET’S LOOK AT THE PURITY JESUS GIVES, THE LIFE HE GIVES, AND THE WAY WE RECEIVE THESE THINGS.

II) Jesus Gives Life to the dead. (vv. 49-56)

I) Jesus Gives Purity to The Impure (vv. 40-48)

A. Jesus seems to misjudge what is truly important (vv. 41-42)

i. Two stories that are braided together
1. Luke draws parallels between these stories so we interpret them together
2. EXAMPLES: “12 years”, “daughter” (vv. 42 & 43, 48)
ii. Jesus’ clear lack of urgency (!)
1. A Jewish leader has a sick daughter – what would you do? (vv. 40-41)
2. C&M: their beautiful parental love (and then Jesus seems to lose focus!)

B. Jesus provides Purity to an Impure Woman

i. Ritual Impurity Alienates People From God (vv. 43-48, Lev. 15)
1. It’s bad enough to live 12 desperate years with a gynecological problem
2. …It’s worse to be “religiously unclean” (not “immoral” but unclean)
ii. Jesus extends Compassion to the alienated in our midst
1. She wanted to “go unnoticed” (vs. 47)
2. But Jesus puts life/death emergency on hold to notice her!
BUT NOW IMAGINE THAT YOU’RE JAIRUS.

A. Jesus Extends Compassion to Grieving People

i. Too late? Death Brings about Deep Grief
1. News no parents ever want to hear: TOO LATE! (vs. 49)
2. Following Jesus: his timing, answers to prayer, NEVER what we expect
ii. Jesus turns mourning into laughter – but not how you’d expect
1. Earlier Jesus promised to turn mourning into laughter; now he does, but it’s the laughter that we’d all have
2. Jesus isn’t being snarky, but courageous in the face of ridicule

B. Jesus Gives Life to Dead People

i. Jesus extends compassion to a grieving family & tenderness to this girl
1. He speaks with tenderness to the family
2. … and then, with affection to the girl
ii. With Jesus, death ha been transformed so that it will be nothing more than sleep
1. They all knew death – they weren’t ignorant; but with Jesus, death has been transformed
2. APPLICATION: Many of us have known the pain of loss…but one day, Jesus will return: “C’mon guys, time to wake up.”
NOW: HOW DO WE TAKE HOLD OF THESE GIFTS

III) How Do We Take Hold of These Gifts?

A. We Claim the Righteousness that Delivers us from Death By Faith

i. What the woman grabs: By faith she claims Jesus’ righteousness (vs. 44)
1. The garment isn’t just a garment: but tassels representing his righteousness
2. And, Jesus didn’t just “heal” her, but he saved her! (vv. 43, 47)
ii. What Jairus “grabs”: By faith his daughter will be saved from death (vs. 50)
a. Inrepreting these stories side by side:
b. So also this daughter would saved from death by faith
iii. Thus: we are “saved” by faith from the greatest impurity that leads to death
1. Our biggest problem isn’t ritual impurity – but our sin that leads to death
2. By faith we claim the righteousness of Jesus that saves us from sin and death

B. This Righteousness is Ours our impurity is passed to Jesus

i. The way that purity works:
1. Normally, purity would move from an unclean person to a clean person
2. SO: if you touch a person w. a flow of blood/corpse àyou are unclean
ii. On the cross our impurity and death go to Jesus
1. But in this story, the opposite happens! The woman becomes ritually clean; the dead becomes alive; why?
2. Because one day, our impurity – our sin, would all flow backwards to Jesus; our death would flow to him.

Conclusion
Cling to Jesus!
