Lesson 13
Worship That Pleases God
God wants all of you.
God wants all of you.
30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
So often we want to offer part time devotion – Being truly devoted is hard work that most are not willing to do.
Jesus asks for a drink in Samaria
The woman at the well is a well-known story
Jesus offers her “living water”
Then she’s we worship on this mountain you worship in Jerusalem
23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
The first principle is why you worship
The second principle is how much of yourself do offer in worship
28 Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe.
The kind of worship that pleases God has four characteristics:
God is pleased when our worship is accurate.
God is pleased when our worship is accurate.
My own personal Jesus
Usually, a Jesus that requires no kind of commitment
This idolatry
Worship must be based on the truth of Scripture
24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
It doesn’t matter what you think God should be
Like the old saying: “God said I believe it that settles it” is false
To “worship in truth” means to worship God as he is truly revealed in the Bible.
God-pleasing worship is deeply emotional and deeply doctrinal.
We use both our hearts and our heads.
God is pleased when our worship is authentic.
God is pleased when our worship is authentic.
“Worship in spirit”
Understand this as your spirit
Some would call this the soul
God created you with a desire worship him
Our spirit communicates with God’s spirit
Worship is your spirit responding to God’s Spirit.
Cheap worship
Just phoning it in
I’m going to say this on Facebook live watching from the couch on a phone is not your best effort
How did Jesus tell us to worship? Heart and soul! Our whole being
Quote: Heartless praise is not praise at all! It is worthless, an insult to God.
God looks past our words to see the attitude of our hearts.
Authentic worship is emotional
But it must be accurate
God hates hypocrisy
He wants your honest, real love
I like what he says about sincerity. You can be sincere but sincerity wrong too.
That’s why both spirit and truth are required.
Worship must be both accurate and authentic.
We use both our hearts and our heads.
Style of worship is not the issue
Some people like hymns
Other prefer contemporary music
These kind issues put the focus on ourselves
Look pass that and worship as an offering and sacrifice to God
God is pleased when our worship is thoughtful.
God is pleased when our worship is thoughtful.
Mindless worship
Mindless worship is meaningless
Just going through the motions
I have seen prayer as why to transition from one part of the service to the next.
Jesus didn’t think much of this kind of worship
7 “And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words.
The next passage is the Lord’s Prayer
Practical advice from the book
I encourage to read through that
Corporate worship should thoughtful
Here at Grace, worship is designed for the unchurched
Length of service Announcements Offering Songs Words and scripture on the screen translations of the bible
16 Suppose some strangers are in your worship service, when you are praising God with your spirit. If they don’t understand you, how will they know to say, “Amen”?
17 You may be worshiping God in a wonderful way, but no one else will be helped.
God is pleased when our worship is practical.
God is pleased when our worship is practical.
Real worship
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Why our bodies
Because without the body you can do nothing
I’ll be with you in spirit? – Means nothing
Living Sacrifice
Living Sacrifice
Real worship costs.
It costs our self-centeredness
It takes the time when it’s not convenient
It gives without receiving
I think it’s worth asking how is your worship?
