Psychologist David Benner: identity is “who we experience ourselves to be – the I each of us carries within”
What is the I you carry within?
TEMPORAL
The Puzzle
Occupation
Finances
Politics
Family
They are temporary.
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
Deeper than the two-dimensional
It speaks to our sin… it too will pass
When we understand ourselves, we can understand where we should be.
ETERNAL
Who should we be? What is the I in you?
For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
Paul has an encounter with himself.
Paul separates his identity from his flesh to his spirit in Christ.
OUR IDENTITIES NEED TO BE IN CHRIST!
Example:
When the shepherds heard:
And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
They left and worshiped Jesus. Their identity was for Christ.
If you need to put your identity in Jesus:
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Simply accept the gift.
God desires a relationship with us.
What is your identity?
REFINED
If your identity is with Christ, are you growing?
Pick up the cross and follow him daily.
Use Ephesians 5 as a guide:
Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.
We should look like Jesus. What truth did Jesus live by?
LOVE:
Matthew 22:37–40 (NASB95)
And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
“This is the great and foremost commandment.
“The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
“On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
LOVE is the cornerstone of imitating Christ.
No matter our situation, our sin we should worship and obey Christ.
