I.     Introduction                                                                                                                      614
q      Here in the last week of Jesus’ life, this enormous crowd has gathered around Him (v.
12ff)
q      Jesus, the Lamb of God, has discerned that the time of His death has come (v.
23)
q      The Lamb of God now faces the cross & what will occur there troubles His soul (v.
27)
·        On the cross He will bear the penalty of sin for His sheep, children, the elect of God
·        On the cross He will redeem sinners from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us
·        On the cross He will be smitten by God, afflicted, pierced through & crushed for our iniquities
·        And even though for the joy set before Him He endured the cross, He experienced trouble, horror, agony in His soul.
We learn from Jesus that even One Who is perfectly disposed to joy experiences trouble in His soul.
q      The imminent death of Christ brought judgment on the world (v.
31) = evil people who hate Jesus & love their sin  – it is a horrible matter to die in your sins (Jn 8:21-24)
q      Jesus then announces the nature & effect of His death on sinners (v.
31-32)
II.
The Crowd’s Response to the Death of Jesus = gospel (v.
34)
A.     They respond with their own understanding of scripture & reality (v.
34a)
B.      They question Jesus’ teaching about Himself (v.
34b)
C.      They question~/doubt His own identity as the promised Messiah (v.
34c)
Crowds are fickle, unreliable, unpredictable – the same ones who met Him with praise & cheers & palm branches just a few hours ago, now question Him & doubt His very identity.
People reveal the content of their hearts by the questions they ask after being confronted with the truth – questions can simply be clever tactics to avoid guilt!

III.
Jesus’ Response to Questions From an Unbelieving Crowd (v.
35-36)
A.     He does not answer their questions – questions of confusion, unbelief & deception
B.      Jesus identifies Himself as “the light” (v.
35a) – 1:4; 8:12; 9:5
Jesus is pure light – righteousness, holiness & truth, there is no darkness or sin in Him.
He is “the Light” & “the Truth”; apart from Jesus Christ, people cannot see the way out of their sins & the way to the Father.
The purpose of light is to shine so that we can see & know the truth…Thank God Jesus, the Light of the world!
C.
He encourages~/exhorts them to respond to the light while they have it (v.
36)
·        You must believe in the Light
·        In order to become sons of light
·        It is URGENT that you believe in Jesus NOW “While you have the light” – “In the day that you hear my voice, do not harden your hearts”.
Can you hear this offer of eternal life, forgiveness of sins, righteousness, heaven…You were born a sinner, born in darkness, but you can become a child of Jesus – ONLY BELIEVE!
D.     He warns them of the dangers of darkness (v.
35b)
·        Darkness is a description of sin (3:19-21)
·        Darkness overtakes or masters those who do not walk~/live in the light
·        People who live in darkness do not know where they are going
Ø    What a dreadful life, groping around in darkness all your life & ultimately in hell - eternal darkness - Mt. 6:23; 25:29-30
Jesus the Messiah was about to die to redeem sinners out of darkness & bring into His marvelous light - this unbelieving crowd stood at the entrance to the kingdom (at the very DOOR) and would not go in.
