Perfect Sure, “Sola Scriptura: Scripture Alone God Speaks. We Listen” October 29, 2017 Psalm 19 is a soaring hymn about the God who reveals Himself to us (as opposed to a God who is the object of man’s search and that we track Him down and by our efforts, find the Lord). God reveals Himself and speaks to us through His World (creation) and His Word. He uses Scripture to powerfully speak to and guide our lives. 10 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 o o First the nouns… Law, Testimony, Precepts, Commandment, Fear, And now for the adjectives. The Word is… à I treasure it above all things à I crave and feast on it o à Warning à Reward Martin Luther said the Word of God reveals God’s holiness and our sin. It drives us to despair so that we may be driven to Christ. 13 14 o Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Without Apology, God says His Word is both … 12 Rules. True, How do I know if God’s Word has the proper place in my life? 11 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. LOOK AT ALL THE WORDS FOR GOD’S WORD: Clean, More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Psalm 19 (ESV) The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat. Pure, Righteous. And what does the Word do? How about some verbs… Reviving, Making wise Rejoicing, Enlightening, Enduring The Big Idea: 1 Right, Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults. Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. A Prayer, A Plea, A Declaration • • • He is asking the Lord to do a work in his life. He pleads for God to so change him that whether the Lord hears his actual words spoken or looks to his inner thoughts they are pleasing. He has come to know the Lord in two ways: o His Rock o His Redeemer
