How to Have and Live With A Biblical Self-Image 1 Corinthians 4:6-7 June 3, 2018 THE BIG IDEA: No gift of common or saving grace is given because we deserve it or have earned it. All of God’s blessings are due to His own extravagant generosity to us. We never have a reason to boast about ourselves – only about God! 3. Get Over Yourself! “… that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another.” (v. 6b) 7” For who sees anything different in you?” (v. 7a) n 1 Corinthians 4:6-7 (ESV) I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. 7 For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it? When pride is conquered by the work of God in our lives, it is both painful and liberating at the same time. 6 4. Never Loose Sight of the Extravagance of God’s Grace What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it? (v. 7b) “receive” è “handed to you” 1. Find & Study the Lives of Those Who Live Godly Lives (4:1) Paul gave them two word-pictures of how think of them: § “servants” n God’s generosity calls for two responses on our part: o Humility o Gratitude § “stewards” à the galley slaves; the under-rowers 2. Choose the Scriptures as the Standard & Authority for the Way You Evaluate Leaders, Live Your Life, and Think About Yourself. I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, 6 “A God who gets only partial credit is a God who is worthy of only partial praise, and such a “god” would hardly warrant our adoration or be capable of eliciting, much less sustaining, our eternal enjoyment." -- Sam Storms
