THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT MONEY
February 10, 2019
The Big Idea: There are over 2000 verses on money in the Bible. 40%
of Jesus’ parables deal with money. Love is only mentioned 310 times in
the King James Bible and 551 times in the NIV. Money is talked about
more than love, heaven or hell.
1. We don’t have the right to use our money however we please.
1 Chronicles 29:14 “But who am I, and who are my people, that we
should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from
you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.”
2. Money points to what rules our hearts.
Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be
also.”
3. Money can cause us to neglect God.
Proverbs 18:11 “The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they
imagine it a wall too high to scale.”
4. We’re never smarter with our money than God.
Proverbs 16:16 “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get
insight rather than silver?”
5. Money troubles start within us.
Luke 12:15 “Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard
against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of
possessions.’”
6. Image drives our spending.
Proverbs 22:1 “A good name is more desirable than riches; to be
esteemed is better than silver or gold.”
7. Money will either bless you or curse you.
1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of
evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith
and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
8. Money can remind us of God’s care for us.
Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be
content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave
you; never will I forsake you.’”
9. Money is a means of blessing.
2 Chronicles 1:11-12 God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s
desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honor, nor
the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life
but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have
made you king, therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given
you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor, such as
no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.”
Matthew 6:1-4 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front
of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from
your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not
announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and
on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have
received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let
your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving
may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret,
will reward you.”
10. Money changes our perspective on eternity.
1 Timothy 6:17-19 “Command those who are rich in this present
world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so
uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us
everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich
in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way
they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the
coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”
Malachi 3:10 “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there
may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty,
“and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out
so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”
Money is a lot like manure. If you let it pile up, it stinks.
If you spread it around, it does good.
