"The One Who Took
Our Sin”
John 19
April 14, 2019
THE BIG IDEA: Jesus, the Son of God, suffered on the Cross, paying
the full price for our Sin. By what He did, He made it possible for people
to be reconciled to their Creator. He took our SIN that we might
become SONS.
John 1:12 (ESV) 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his
name, he gave the right to become children of God,
Why Did Jesus Take Our Sin & Suffer Like This?
1. Because Sin Has SEPARATED Each of us from God.
Romans 6:23 (ESV) 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free
gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
2. Because It Was Always God’s Plan to RECLAIM and
REDEEM People
Genesis 3:15 (ESV)
15
I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Romans 5:8 (ESV)

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.
3. Because God’s Holiness and His Plan Required that Our
Sin Be PUNISHED
Isaiah 53:3–7 (ESV)
Ephesians 1:4–10 (ESV)
4. Because Jesus is the Only One Who Was QUALIFIED to
Bear the Punishment WE Deserved.
“Before we can begin to see the cross as something done for us,
we have to see it as something done by us.” ― John Stott
Hebrews 10:11-14
Hebrews 10:17–18 (ESV)
17
then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds
no more.” 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer
any offering for sin.
5. Because God Has Always Offered Us a Relationship
Based Upon MERCY and GRACE.
Titus 3:3–5 (ESV)
3
For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves
to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and
envy, hated by others and hating one another. 4 But when the
goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he
saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but
according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and
renewal of the Holy Spirit,
Three Realities of Jesus on the Cross
è He died as Sacrifice
è He died as Substitute
è He died as Savior
As we come to the Lord’s Table, remember …
1. It is a Table of Remembrance
2. It is a Table of Worship
3. It is a Table of Commitment
