Let’s Go: “Motives of the Heart”

Mark 12:41-44

I. I see you! (vs 41-42)

“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7

“On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come.” I Corinthians 16:2

II. What’s left? (vs 43)

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21

III. All I have is yours! (vs 44)

“The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” 2 Corinthians 9:6

“Jesus said to him, ‘If you would be perfect, go sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Matthew 19:21

WHY GIVE AN OFFERING OF YOUR INCOME TO THE LORD’S WORK?

1. It will allow you to keep God as a priority in your life.

2. It will bring God’s wisdom and order to your finances.

3. It will serve as a practical reminder that God is the owner of everything you possess.

4. It will encourage your spiritual growth and trust in God.

5. It will ensure you of treasure in heaven.

6. It will strengthen the ministry, outreach, and stability of HCC.

7. It will help accomplish needed building projects and renovations at HCC.

FAITH SHEET QUESTIONS:

1. Why does the Bible have a lot to say about money and our attitude toward it?

2. What is the purpose of giving an offering? Who are the various parties that benefit? Does your pastor’s salary each week have any connection to the amount of the offering?

3. How would you respond to a preacher or teacher who told you there was a certain percentage that you should give in order to receive a blessing?

4. How can knowing God’s purposes for money help us to avoid loving money?

5. Which is the first priority: providing for oneself and one’s family, or supporting God’s work? In what scenario might these things come into conflict?

6. How might a person who gives 10 percent every week fail to please God?
