INTRODUCTION:

God will provide a way of escape. (12:29-32)

Exodus 12:29–30 ESV
29 At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock. 30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians. And there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where someone was not dead.
It finally happens.
Captive in the dungeon - literally the highest to the lowest were impacted by this.
livestock - most were dead anyway.
great cry - there were no windows, so once the first house had it happen it would wake up the neighbors.
HAHA like watching oldest vs youngest child.
Some of you have been through that. Many children and adults were killed that night.
For there was not a house - this is one of the worse calamities in human history.
Exodus 12:31–32 ESV
31 Then he summoned Moses and Aaron by night and said, “Up, go out from among my people, both you and the people of Israel; and go, serve the Lord, as you have said. 32 Take your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and be gone, and bless me also!”
Up, go out from among my people - Finally, this is what it took. This is finally soften Pharoah heart.
be gone and bless me also - Maybe my fortunes will change.
BLESS ME ALSO??

God will lead you one step at a time. (12:33-39)

Exodus 12:33–34 ESV
33 The Egyptians were urgent with the people to send them out of the land in haste. For they said, “We shall all be dead.” 34 So the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneading bowls being bound up in their cloaks on their shoulders.
they just wanted the Jews out -
Like Japan in WW2, they were ready to end the war quickly.
dough before it was leavened - It was also a blessing....
we shall all be dead - like how people felt when Covid started haha
Exodus 12:35–36 ESV
35 The people of Israel had also done as Moses told them, for they had asked the Egyptians for silver and gold jewelry and for clothing. 36 And the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. Thus they plundered the Egyptians.
We discussed before - they plundered the Egyptians and being asked to leave. God turned their slavery into victoyr.
He does this for us to. Where sin abounds grace all the more. In our weakness he is stronger.
Kings would usually collect tax over the spring anyway.
Exodus 12:37–38 ESV
37 And the people of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children. 38 A mixed multitude also went up with them, and very much livestock, both flocks and herds.
Rameses to succoth - Rameses, city of Goshem. Succoth 15 miles away. Decent walk for that many people. They say it is not possible. (but check the context, miracles happen and they were ).
It was in the wrong direction (SHOW MAP)
600,000 men - adult men . 2.4 million in total.
on foot - infantry -
A mixed multitude! - some of the eypgptians and gentiles were leaving with them. Because why would you want to stay?
very much - uncountable. They were leaving as conquerors.
Exodus 12:39 ESV
39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough that they had brought out of Egypt, for it was not leavened, because they were thrust out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared any provisions for themselves.
unleavened cakes of dough - it was practical as well. You can carry much more?????

Remember what God has brought you out from. (12:40-51)

Before they were led into the promise land, they were told to remember where they came from.
Exodus 12:40–42 ESV
40 The time that the people of Israel lived in Egypt was 430 years. 41 At the end of 430 years, on that very day, all the hosts of the Lord went out from the land of Egypt. 42 It was a night of watching by the Lord, to bring them out of the land of Egypt; so this same night is a night of watching kept to the Lord by all the people of Israel throughout their generations.
430 years. - For us that is the year 1592.
Night of watching - still kept today, but not in the way that you think.
Exodus 12:43–45 ESV
43 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the statute of the Passover: no foreigner shall eat of it, 44 but every slave that is bought for money may eat of it after you have circumcised him. 45 No foreigner or hired worker may eat of it.
This was only for the people of God.
Slaves -were brought into the home as a family member, so they got to.
God cared about the slaves.
Forgeigner or hired worker - inviting people over for Christmas dinner?
Exodus 12:46 ESV
46 It shall be eaten in one house; you shall not take any of the flesh outside the house, and you shall not break any of its bones.
Isolated?????
Exodus 12:47–49 ESV
47 All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. 48 If a stranger shall sojourn with you and would keep the Passover to the Lord, let all his males be circumcised. Then he may come near and keep it; he shall be as a native of the land. But no uncircumcised person shall eat of it. 49 There shall be one law for the native and for the stranger who sojourns among you.”
all the congregation - all Israelite.
circumcised - if you are going to take part, then you must follow. HAHA makes you think twice at sneaking in a little food.
Christians must follow, not the law but Jesus.
one law for the native and sojourns - mixed multitude. God wanted them to bring others into his law.
Exodus 12:50–51 ESV
50 All the people of Israel did just as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron. 51 And on that very day the Lord brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts.
CONCLUSION - Why was there passover?
Exodus 6 - 4 promises.
I will take out
I will set you free
I will redeem you
I will take you.
4 drinks for 4 promises.
Bitter herbs to remind you of what it was like to be slavery. (prob when Judas was mentioned, after set you free)
Third cup was likely the communion cup. I will redeem you. Its the cup of my covenant
