Video – We hold these truths to be self-evident…LIFE
It is LIFE Sunday all across the nation. If you are reading ONE chapter A Day, this year with us, you should have noticed by now, John focuses on LIFE. He opens up His gospel announcing that Jesus is the source of LIFE.
John 1:3–4 (ESV)
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life...”
John identifies Jesus as the author of every life. He ends the gospel with these words about life,
31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Eternal life is found, given, received, begins by believing in Jesus’ name.
Smack dab in the middle of the gospel Christ announces His purpose for coming into the world,
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the source, the author and owner, the protector and the Savior of every life.
But, you know, the farther our world moves away from believing in a Creator, believing in God, the less we value life on every level - young or old, weak or strong , dependent or self-reliant.
If there is no creator, then, life is a series of “random chances”. If there is no God then, God did not give you life and your life is your own to do as you please. If there is no God, then, people are objects on on this planet whose value is measured by what they offer. The more they offer the greater their value. People are either producers that are useful to the world, or expendable for they “cost” too much to keep around. NOTHING could be father from the truth.
Because there is a God. The GOD and
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.
If we go back to the beginning we rediscover the truth that God loves life. After God created on each of the first five days of creation, he said, “Behold, it was good.” But on the sixth day, after
gen 1:27
27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
Then He blessed them,
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
And then, after blessing them, as He looked back over all that He had made,
English Standard Version Chapter 1
31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
He said, VERY GOOD! God loves all life!
Video: “Every Sacred Life”
Job said,
4 The Spirit of God has made me,
and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Your Life belongs to God. It is not yours to do as you please, but rather as that which pleases God.
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
The Lord Your, God decided the number of days you're going to live and He doesn’t want you short-circuiting it.
5 Since his days are determined,
and the number of his months is with you,
and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass,
I don’t have a right to take my life, you don’t have the “right” to take your life, no one has the right to take the the life of another, at any age or stage in life.
God determined your value when He chose to love YOU before your birth,
Jeremiah 31:3 (NIVUK84)
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with loving-kindness.
But God never stopped loving His world in spite of what happened in the garden, when sin entered the world, and death came through sin. No,
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Your value was set when you became a child of God.
There is nothing more sacred to God than life.
13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
From a human viewpoint we may be unplanned pregnancies, but there are no accidental conceptions. Maybe we didn't plan it and maybe it even came as a result of some evil, but there are no accidental conceptions. God has a purpose in every one of them even though we don't have a purpose for every one of them. God planned every life.
That was last year’s headline. The subtitle says it all. More than a million babies aborted each year. Roe V. Wade decision of 1973.
How does that compare with all the men and women who have died in our all the major wars since 1775? 1 million, 303 thousand, 701 vs. 62+ million in the last 49 years.
When God says, “You shall not kill” He means suicide, euthanasia and abortion. But it goes much deeper than this.
Listen to Luther’s explanation to this commandment:
We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need.
Remember that every outward breaking of this commandment begins in the heart of the sinner. Murder is not the place of beginning is the end of the act. Every completed action of harm began with an unkind thought that grew into to an unkind action hurting or harming another life, breaking God’s commandment.
When Clarence Darrow said, many years ago, “I’ve never murdered anybody, but he had read many an obituary with glee” he was confessing his guilt and acknowledging his sin against this commandment. For as Luther explains, any time we refuse to help and support another person we are guilty of violating this commandment.
That makes us all guilty. From the youngest to the oldest, we “We’re all in trouble!”
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
And our only hope of standing before God is in this: God Himself once broke the commandment, thou shalt not kill. Once HE allowed an innocent man to die. He let Him be abused. He let Him take the rap, for crimes He did not commit. He let Him be crucified so that others could go free –free from guilt, free from condemnation, free to live life as He intended. That one man was Jesus, His Only Son, our Lord. God permitted the murder of the “author of life” and here is why:
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
He sent Jesus to take upon Himself Your sin as His own.
Isaiah 53:9–10 (NIVUK84)
9"...though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
Thanks be to God for Christ announces.
47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.
As those who believe in the life-giver, Jesus. We stand for life. Here is one of the ways can,
