The following is reprinted from the introduction to Truth
For Life: 365 Daily Devotions by Alistair Begg:
“God’s word is a glorious gift. Our Father has given it to us
in order that we might know His Son and that we might
live in the power of His Spirit, in obedience to His truth. It
is worth pausing to consider this reality: when we read
the Bible, we’re dealing with the words of the Creator of
the universe, spoken to His creation. It is impossible for us
to understand ourselves, our world, or anything else without His word. As we read a newspaper, as we try to make
sense of our society, and as we look to our history and to
our future, it is the Bible we need if we are to get a handle
on it all. God’s word is the truth that you and I need to
navigate every day of this life, and to point us to the one in
whom we find the life that really is life...And the Scriptures
will—or they should—make a difference to our minds, to
our hearts, and to our lives.”

For several years I have read the Bible through twice in 12
months. It is a great and powerful tree, each word of
which is a mighty branch. Each of these branches have I
well shaken, so desirous was I to know what each one bore
and what it would give me. And the shaking of them has
never disappointed me.

CALL TO WORSHIP
(from Nehemiah 8)
They read from the book, from the Law of God,
clearly,
and they gave the sense, so that the
people understood the reading.
And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra
the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught
the people said to all the people,
“This day is holy to the Lord your
God; do not mourn or weep.”
For all the people wept as they heard the words of
the Law. Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat
the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to
anyone who has nothing ready,
for this day is holy to our Lord.
And do not be grieved,
for the joy of the Lord is your
strength.”

Private prayer prepares us for public worship. Pray the
following prayer and meditate on it during the time we
prepare for worship. Perhaps it will ready you to pour
yourself out to God in worship and to receive what God has
in store for you this morning.
Your law is perfect, 0 God; your ways are just. We
praise you for Christ, who makes known your
Word. Gold's value is nothing compared to the
salvation you offer. The sweetness of honey is a
foretaste of the feast you prepare. Made alive by
your mercy and renewed in your Spirit, we come
adoring your goodness, 0 Lord, our Rock and
Redeemer.
James G. Kirk. When We Gather, Revised Edition: A Book
of Prayers for Worship
Responding to the
Scripture readings
At the end of the scripture readings, the reader will
announce that, “This is the word of God for the people of
God.” The congregation responds, “Thanks be to God.”
At the end of the Gospel reading, the reader changes the
announcement to say, “This is the Gospel of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ.” The congregation responds, “The
Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the
world.”
