The relationship between David and Saul’s son, Jonathan, is often held up as a shining example of biblical friendship. And it’s true, there are many characteristics to celebrate and emulate in this story. But what stands out the most is the relationship that their friendship is based on – the relationship between God and his people. Theirs is a ‘godly friendship’ because it is founded on God’s covenant love and it points forward to the self-sacrifice of Jesus. As a church, we’ll be thinking a lot about Christian relationships (and friendships) in the coming months, and this story gives us a great foundation – the love, covenant and sacrifice of God in the gospel
