Christian slang “Babylon Bee”
I'll pray about that: I won't pray about that, but I totally care about you.
Love on you: As far as we can tell it just means "love you" but with some unintentional creepiness thrown in for good measure.
Just: A handy word to pack into your prayers when you need to pad them out for time or stall to give you time to come up with what you're going to pray for next.
I don't feel called to that ministry opportunity right now: I don't wanna.
The Lord is laying this on my heart: I wanna.
Wow, interesting thought: What you just said was the most damnable heresy I’ve ever heard. May God have mercy on your soul.
We need to define what we say. We throw out words we know because we’ve been around Christian culture but we don’t actually, truly know what they mean. And if you don’t know what it means then you can’t actually practice it. So through this series we are going to define what we say SO THAT you can practice it.
Before we jump in the text real quick here are some “Christianese” terms we will define in this series:
Prayer - hows your prayer life? What is prayer, how does it work, how can you be sure you're actually praying,
Walking In The Spirit - Were told to walk in the Spirit, but what does that mean, how do i do it, how do I know if I am doing it
For God’s Glory - The biggest question in the world, “Whats the purpose of life?” Answer?
Repentance - Turning away from sin, but in the moment how do I know if I have repented because maybe you have sinned you pray to God “I repent” and then a week later you do it again
Devo Time - you need to read your bible, How though, like a morning newspaper, like textbook, is your bible reading even profitable are you actually READING the Word in the right way.
Many of you are pillbox Christians - You determine your relationship w/ God on the pills you take. Read the Bible (Pill One) Pray (Pill Two) Go to Church (Pill Three) and if you’ve taken those pills you automatically are okay.
You need crack open those pills and place them under a microscope, you need to understand what these things ACTUALLY consist of because many of you are taking placebo pills. Quite Time = 1 min in a proverb, Prayer = 2 min of talking in your head and 3 minutes of thinking about what else is going on.
We need to define the words we say and when we do I HOPE it will allow you to begin to practice them.
Matt 23.24-28 ““You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. “You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. “So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.”
Are the Pharisees good guys or bad guys?
What makes them bad?
They were ‘religious looking’ dress, eat, TALK but didn’t know God.
I show you this because I want to remind you how easy it is to play the part. Those guys went to school, wore certain robes and they had the entire nation fooled into thinking those guys are going to heaven.
You can play the part. You can fool your parents, staff leader and if you go for long enough even yourself into thinking you’re a true believer because you REALLY LOOK like one. But under neath the Christian exterior is dead mans bones.
I hope you find this series to be not just a helpful dictionary but an opportunity to be real.
I hope you use these messages as a platform to examine yourself and see if maybe your life has been a Christian facade or maybe you just take the easy route often and your small group times are just easier to get through if you have the right answer and say the right thing.
I really hope that this environment would be a place where you do not feel the need to look and act fine if you are not.
1 Tim 1:15 “It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.”
If you are hear putting on a show of why youre good, and you religous and you can be a Christian without Christ, Jesus didn’t come for you
Jesus came to save sinners not righteous.
Lets Define what we say and practice it. Be humble enough to admit what you don’t know and ask for help when youre sinking.
