Jesus has just healed the woman who had a blood disease for years, and raised the little girl from death, and He is headed on His way. Two blind men follow Jesus seeking to get their sight back. They press Him all the way to the house in which He was headed and implored Christ restore their vision. They had heard of Jesus. They heard the tales of what He was able to do to those who were sick and afflicted. These men were blind, and sought the ability to see again from Jesus. Jesus basically asked these men “Do you believe the stories you hear? Do you believe that I can do what they say I can?” This comes back to faith. Not necessarily if Jesus was the Son of God, but did they have faith that Jesus had the power to heal. They did, and because of the faith that they had, Jesus healed them
Now Jesus did something interesting here. He said “see that no one knows about it.” Now I do not know how the news got out. Maybe seeing previously blind men able to see again by the public caused the news to spread like wildfire. Maybe the men simply could not contain their excitement over their renewed sight, but whatever the case the news of Jesus’s ability and His whereabouts spread farther, and Jesus decided that He was going to close up shop in the area and move on.
Why would He move on? If you were kind of a loner and did not have many friends, then you hit the lottery and suddenly everyone takes interest in you, why do you think this would be so? Do you think it would be because all of a sudden you were desirable and the coolest person ever over night, or do you think the new found wealth might have something to do with it? In the same way, people were coming to Jesus because He had something to offer them. Physical healing. The only problem was that Jesus came to share the message of spiritual healing, and His message was being hindered because of the fame He had amassed due to His ability. So He decided to move on so that His message could be delivered without the knowledge of His healing abilities could get in the way.
On His way out of town, a possessed man was brought to Him in hopes of being freed from the grasps of the demon within him. Jesus casts the demon out, sets the man free, the people marvel, and the Pharisees said that Jesus healed by the power of the devil. We will discuss this more when we get to chapter 12, but the devil does not heal nor does he give the power to heal. He destroys. He ruins. Jesus is the one who builds up and restores. The Pharisees spoke as they did because they were jealous. Jesus was everything that they were supposed to be. Godly, pure, healers, righteous. He was everything that they were not, and the people loved Him. He stole their light, their thunder, and most importantly their authority. This rattled them to their core. So much that they said that Jesus Himself worked in the power of the devil himself.
Jesus did many, many things while He was here. So many things that John said that there was not enough ink nor paper in the world to contain what He did for people while He was here. His message to the world was the their Savior was here. Their helper was here. Their freedom was there. Heaven was right in front of them. All they had to do was place their faith in Him, and take hold of it, and they would be saved. You have the same opportunity laid out in front of you. You are going one place or another. Heaven or hell. You have the choice. If you want to chose heaven, place your faith in Jesus. If you don’t know how, talk to me. If you have questions, ask me. If you want to talk, I’m right here. See you next week.
