Acts, Chapter 1 Review

We are doing a survey of Acts. For the most part, just hitting the main points. In preparation, I had to force myself to focus on the main narrative, and skip some good/interesting points
feel free to call/text about other things
Also, Acts represents “us” and our time period. How do we live, what do we do, while waiting for Jesus to come back
in Chapter 1, Jesus told disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit in Jerusalem, so they will have the power to be his witnesses
They do so (120), and also pick a replacement apostle, and devote themselves to prayer
now a quick background on what Jesus said about the Holy Spirit.
John 14:16–17 NASB95
16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
Emphasis on the He/Him and not “it”
helper, advocate, comforter - He is on our side, He is for you
spirit of truth - reveals truth, convicts with truth, witnesses to the truth, confirms the truth
emphasis on the abides with you
coming and staying, not just a power surge like sampson, or just a few people, but to all believers
so now let’s look at when the Holy Spirit comes, which is considered the birth of the Church
June 5 (added to calendar)
Acts 2:1 NASB95
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
interesting how God’s plan is following the Jewish Calendar established in the Old Testament
Jesus crucified during Passover, and he became the true Passover Lamb, Lamb of God
and now the Holy Spirit will establish the church on the day of Pentecost
Now this Holiday was a major holiday festival called the Feast of Weeks/Feast of Harvest comes up 50 days after Passover, thus the Greek name Pentecost
people bring offerings to thank God for the harvest God had given them, and celebrate
Holy Spirit comes on this holiday that celebrates harvest
Jesus said the harvest is great but the workers are few - a lot of people need saving, but not many workers to go out and bring them in
in chapter 1, Jesus said the Holy Spirit will give you power to become my witnesses (power to help you bring in the harvest)
another reminder: The Holy Spirit does a lot, be we often forget one of His main purposes is to help us be witnesses for Christ
Acts 2:2–4 NASB95
2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
Precise description
there were all together, then noise like a violent rushing wind, and that sound filled the room
looked like tongues of fire (flame or fire shaped like tongues) rested on everyone there
everyone in the room was filled with Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, the Holy Spirit was telling them what to say
Acts 2:5–8 NASB95
5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, “Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 “And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?
People heard the sound of mighty rushing wind, and came to see what that was all about.
when they get there, they are amazed that people from Galilee (locals) are speaking languages from other nations and territories
most people from Galilee spoke a Galilean dialect of Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek mixed in.
but these 120 are speaking all these other languages
Acts 2:9–11 NASB95
9 “Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.”
all of these different languages, at least 16 listed here, if I counted right
they are not just saying random words, but they are speaking about the mighty deeds of God
Acts 2:12–13 NASB95
12 And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others were mocking and saying, “They are full of sweet wine.”
They are wondering, “what’s going on?”
some people try to make a joke out of it - maybe these guys are drunk
Acts 2:14 NASB95
14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.
Then the twelve stood out front of the 120, and then Peter stood out in front of the twelve, and began to speak
so, all others got quiet or all other interpreted for Peter (Greek, Aramaic)
in either case, there was decency and order . . . it was not chaos
there was a disturbance, but it was an orderly disturbance
The Holy Spirit is a person, God of order, not something to be controlled or coralled
not saying that you can’t have a high time in the Lord, were things go “crazy”
but it’s not going to be crazy and folks getting hurt, embarassed, out of order
Acts 2:15–18 NASB95
15 “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; 16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: 17 And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; 18 Even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy.
no, we are not drunk, too early to drink anyways
This is scripture being fulfilled, and Paul quotes the OT, that was their Bible.
These are the last days: The Last Days include Pentecost until Jesus comes back, last period
God will pour out his spirit, instead of visiting a few for a limited time (instead of drops)
God will be generous with his spirit . . . everyone is eligible
old, young, male, female, even people with the lowest stations in life . . . all have opportunity
and they shall prophesy - a lot falls under prophecy - the whole Idea is “What is God saying” or “This is the message from God”, ambassadors for Christ
preaching about the current time, preaching about you, preaching about the future
Acts 2:19–21 NASB95
19 And I will grant wonders in the sky above And signs on the earth below, Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood, Before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come. 21 And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’
As Paul is quoting the Old Testament, it speaks of endtime things
This is the beginning of that, judgment is coming . . . but good news .. everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved!
Acts 2:22–24 NASB95
22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. 24 “But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
Peter recounts what happened to Jesus, the famous prophet from Galilee (recent events)
you all know he was from God by the miracles and wonders
but it was in God plan, that you all would deliver him over to the Romans to be killed
yet God raised him from the dead, because he was more than just a prophet
Verses 25-31
Peter again uses the Old Testament and quotes David.
David speaks of one whose body would not see decay . . . and Peter said you know David wasn’t talking about himself, because he died and was buried, and stayed buried
So David was speaking prophetically about Christ
Acts 2:32 NASB95
32 “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.
Jesus rose from the dead, so David was speaking about Jesus
and we are not just saying that Jesus rose, or that we heard he rose, the 120 of us personally saw the resurrected Jesus, we are witnesses
(we heard that he rose, just like the people Peter is talking to now)
Acts 2:33–36 NASB95
33 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. 34 “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, 35 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’ 36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Jesus has ascended back into heaven and has sent his Spirit . . . this is what you are seeing and hearing
So the only conclusion is that Jesus was the Lord and Christ!
the messiah, the son of God, the anointed one, the descendant of David we have been waiting for
and you all crucified him!
Acts 2:37–38 NASB95
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
many were convicted when they heard this . . . “oh my, what shall we do”
first invitation, was not an invitation, but a response to a question
nothing wrong with begging people to come to God, you see it in the Bible
but there can also be where people are begging you, “please tell me what to do!”
Peter responds, “repent, be baptized, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit”
Repent - to turn
turn from your current path - your current path is against Jesus
you turn to following Jesus
you turn because you believe in Jesus, what he was, and what he did, you believe the witness that he did rise
Be baptized - first act of obedience
and that’s it . . . you will receive the Holy Spirit too!
salvation is not complicated
Jesus is who the Bible says he was, and I will follow Him
Acts 2:39 NASB95
39 “For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
it is that easy, and it is a promise . . . if you repent and are baptized, you will be saved
this promise is for you, your children . . . and for all who are far off
there is plenty of room at the cross!
all who are far off - that’s us, by distance and time, we are far off
but God called us to Himself too!
Acts 2:40–41 NASB95
40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!” 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.
He preached some more, encouraging people to get saved (some begging)
about 3,000 people were saved that day!
Acts 2:42 NASB95
42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
didn’t stop at getting saved, but being taught, discipled
they also fellowship with each other - church family
breaking of bread (communion)
prayed together
Acts 2:43 NASB95
43 Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles.
many miracles were happening through the 12
Acts 2:44–45 NASB95
44 And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; 45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.
they sold all they had, and put their money together
probably mistakenly thought that Jesus was coming back in months
good part was they took care of each other . . . .we are in this together
Christianity is a lot about helping others, but especially your Christian brothers and sisters
Acts 2:46 NASB95
46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,
one mind in the temple
at this time, this is a group of Jews, no Gentiles
this is going to create problems for other Jewish leaders, who don’t like this new sect
contiued to have communion, fellowship meals, there’s joy, there’s sincerity (selling all you had)
Acts 2:47 NASB95
47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.
praising God, having favor with people (miracles, benevolence)
and the Lord added to their numbers
when we do what God wants us to do, the Lord will add the numbers
if God adds numbers, don’t get the big head like you did something
if God doesn’t add numbers, if you are doing what you are supposed to do, don’t get discouraged . . . God is the one who gives the increase, so just be faithful
