Astonished with Jesus’ teaching. Where did this Man get these things?
Mark 6.2 “And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!”
With whom was Jesus identified?
Mark 6.3 “Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him.”
John 1.45 “Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.””
Why is His family seeking to speak to Him?
Their concern for his wellbeing.
Mark 3.6 “Then the Pharisees went out and immediately plotted with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.”
Their concern for his mental state.
Matthew 12.8 “For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.””
Mark 3.21 “But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.””
John 10.20 “And many of them said, “He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?””
However, His step brothers did not believe in Him.
Matthew 10.36 “and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’”
Matt 5.44 “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,”
John 7.5 “For even His brothers did not believe in Him.”
Yet, later they did believe
Yet, later they did believe
Acts 1.14 “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.”
Col 1.21 “And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled”
Matthew 12:47 (NKJV)
Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.”
Luke 11.27-28 “And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!” But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!””
But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?”
And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!
Matthew 19.29 “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.”
For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”
