Zechariah’s Song: God Did Not Forget • Luke 1:67-80 Alec Motyer: “In the Old Testament, Jesus is predicted; in the gospels, Jesus is revealed; in the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus is preached; in the Epistles, Jesus is explained; and in the Book of Revelation, Jesus is expected.” December 13, 2020 The Big Idea: After 400 years of “silence”, God speaks clearly, announcing a Savior will be born, but also that a Prophet will be born. The Prophet will be named John and he will call people to repent of their sin and prepare their hearts for the Savior. God did not forget what He promised. • All others play supporting roles – even John. o Who is John? § God’s prophet § Called people to repentance and the salvation Jesus would give. • The best Christmas Songs tell us who God is: o Visitor (v. 68) o Redeemer (v. 68) o Speaks to us (v. 70) o Merciful (v. 72) o Remembers His Covenant Promises (vv. 72-73) o Invites us to serve Him (vv. 74-75) • What Does Jesus Want to Do for You? o Be the Light that comes in your dark world § We “sit” in darkness § We humans live in the “shadow of death” § The light that will guide us to the “way of peace” LUKE 1:67-80 (ESV) 67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, 68 69 70 71 72 73 74 75 76 77 78 79 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel. 80 The central character in the Story of the Bible is Jesus. Through Elizabeth and Zechariah God sent a Prophet named John who would clearly proclaim God’s gracious offer of Salvation through repentance from sin and trust in Jesus. God loves to work through ordinary people who dare to take Him at His word and do whatever He asks of them.
