Revelation 2:8-11

What should we know about Smyrna?
•
•
•
•
It was a prosperous and beautiful city.
It is the only one of the 7 cities that has remained occupied
over the last 2000 years.
It was loyal to Rome and a center of the emperor cult.
It was a very hard place to be a faithful Christian. The church
suffered in Smyrna.
TIMELESS TRUTHS FOR OUR LIVES

The way we are living as Christians deserves examination
if we never seem to face pushback or outright opposition
from those who do not know Christ. (v. 9)
o
We must make sure that we are prepared to pay a price
and even suffer as a result of following Jesus, but not
because we are being intentionally difficult, obnoxious,
or doing wrong! (1 Peter 3:17; Matthew 5:16)
o
The high calling of Jesus is that in this life we …
The Big Idea:
The Western Church knows little about persecution
and suffering as a result of following Christ. We must learn about how
Christians and churches pay for faithfully following Jesus so we can pray
for them and be more prepared should we ever face similar
consequences. By definition, testing is meant to reveal what is actually
in us. The Lord promises eternal life to those who die in Christ.

‘The words of the first and the last, who died and came to
life.
“‘I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are
rich) and the slander of those who say that they are Jews
and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

Do not live in fear. (v. 10)

Stay faithful until the day we die. (v. 10)

Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the
devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you
may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation.
Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Jesus is with us in every trouble we face, including our
final struggle – death. (v. 10)

God gives life to His children who trusted His Son – now
and forever. The Christian should have no fear of the
“second death” (v. 11)
