Remember the Main Thing
Philippians 2:5-11
May 30, 2021
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ
Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count
equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself,
by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of
men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by
becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a
cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on
him the name that is above every name, so that at the name
of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and
under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is
Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11 (ESV)
Big Idea:
Our confidence in salvation is provided by Jesus Christ and His
work on the cross. But He also shows us how to solve our
conflicts in the church.
Remember that Christ gave up His heavenly glory.
Before His earthly birth, Christ was adored in heaven.
Compare Isaiah 6:1-5 with Isaiah 53:1-2.
Remember that Christ gave up His earthly glory.
He had every right to demand worship, but He came in
humility.
Remember that Christ gave up His earthly comfort.
He had every right to luxury, but He chose to die for us.
Remember that Christ gave up His earthly reputation.
His death was not that of a hero, but of a criminal.
Remember that all of these will be restored.
One day all will recognize Him in all His glory and might.
Questions:
What titles or honors do you use to “put people in their place?”
When was the last time you served and didn’t seek recognition for
it?
What is the one thing you won’t sacrifice for the good of others?
Are you willing to stand for truth and do the right thing even if it
causes others to lower their esteem of you?
