Pictures of Mercy & Grace : The Lord’s Supper and The Cross John 19 June 19, 2021 Three Things Jesus Takes Away Because of the Cross: 1. Jesus takes away our sin and guilt. [John 1:29] The Big Idea: In the Cross we see the darkness of our Sin, as it is placed 2. Jesus takes away the wrath of God toward our sin. upon a sinless Jesus. On the Cross the wrath of God against Sin is fully and completely expressed. When someone believes that is what Jesus did on our behalf, repents (turns away) from our sin and turns to Jesus, trusting Him as Savior and Lord of life, they are made right with God. God has saved them! [1John 4:10] 3. Jesus takes away the distance between God and us. [1 Peter 2:10] John 19 (ESV) 19 16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” 17 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things, 23 As You Look at Christ On the Cross: 1. See the Sacrifice [Hebrews 10:10] 2. See the Substitute [Romans 4:25] 3. See the Savior [Titus 2:13] As You Look at the Lord’s Supper: 1 Corinthians 11:23–28 (ESV) 23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 1. Look Back [1John1:7] 2. Look Within [1 Corinthians 11:27-28] 3. Look Ahead [Revelation7:9-10] You will never reach the place of needing more Mercy than God has or is willing to give you. Your sin will never be greater than His Grace!
