The Lord’s Supper:
Proclaiming Christ
1 Corinthians 11:23-29
October 31, 2021
The Big Idea: In the Cross we see the darkness of our Sin, as it is placed
upon a sinless Jesus. On the Cross the wrath of God against Sin is fully and
completely expressed. When someone repents (turns away) from our sin and turns
to Jesus, trusting Him as Savior and Lord of life, they are made right with God.
God has saved them! When we observe the Lord’s Supper we all become
proclaimers of this Gospel.
There are many elements of New Testament worship, but only two that we
consider as being in the category of ordinances: Baptism and The Lord’s
Supper.
• They are divine ordinances established by Jesus Himself
• They are ceremonies in which material elements represent and point to real
blessings from the Lord.
• The ordinances testify to grace but do not dispense grace.
• The ordinances are “certifications” of belonging.
John 19:28–30 (ESV)
28
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the
Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a
sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.
30
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he
bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
As You Look at the Lord’s Supper:
1 Corinthians 11:23–28 (ESV) 23 For I received from the Lord what I also
delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed
took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This
is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the
same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new
covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance
of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you
proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an
unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the
Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and
drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the
body eats and drinks judgment on himself.

1. Look Back [1 Peter 3:18]
2. Look Within [1 Corinthians 11:27-28]
3. Look Ahead [Revelation 19:6-10]
tetelestai (te-tel-les’-ty); to end, complete, execute, discharge the debt
è A servant would come back to his Master and say, “The project is
finished”
è A business owner would stamp on the loan papers, “The debt is
paid in full”
è A priest would examine the animal brought to the Temple and
declare, “The sacrifice is perfect”
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus,
the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before
him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the
right hand of the throne of God.
