Today we are going to continue this series of Heroes of the Bible.
Today we are going to speak about Elijah
Before we start I want to read
Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.
I want you to see the beginning of that
Elijah was a man with a nature like ours
Meaning
He was one of us
He was one of us, he had the same issues that we faced. He faced temptations in the world, he faced difficulties in the world, and he had discouragements thrown his way.
Now there is a lot of scripture that speaks on Elijah but I want to focus on one set.
Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” And the word of the Lord came to him: “Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
Ok in here there is 3 portraits we find of Elijah. this is why I chose this scripture.
1st portait
Man of Confrontation
Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”
Now you are probably saying ok Erich, this doesnt prove confrontation this just proves that he went to the king to tell him the work of the Lord.
To understand this verse we need to look back a little bit.
And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord, more than all who were before him. And as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, he took for his wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and went and served Baal and worshiped him. He erected an altar for Baal in the house of Baal, which he built in Samaria. And Ahab made an Asherah. Ahab did more to provoke the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.
I want to look at verse 30 real quick
And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the Lord, more than all who were before him.
There was 5 Kings before him that all did evil in the sight of the Lord.
50 years these kings did not follow God
Nadab the son of Jeroboam began to reign over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and walked in the way of his father, and in his sin which he made Israel to sin.
In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha the son of Ahijah began to reign over all Israel at Tirzah, and he reigned twenty-four years. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and walked in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin which he made Israel to sin.
In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah the son of Baasha began to reign over Israel in Tirzah, and he reigned two years.
Zimri came up and kills Elah to destroy the hous of Baasha why?
Thus Zimri destroyed all the house of Baasha, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke against Baasha by Jehu the prophet, for all the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son, which they sinned and which they made Israel to sin, provoking the Lord God of Israel to anger with their idols.
Zimri only held the reign for 7 days
And when Zimri saw that the city was taken, he went into the citadel of the king’s house and burned the king’s house over him with fire and died, because of his sins that he committed, doing evil in the sight of the Lord, walking in the way of Jeroboam, and for his sin which he committed, making Israel to sin.
Omri did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and did more evil than all who were before him.
So we have all these kings who turn around and let the temptations, and difficulties tear them down to all do evil in the sight of the Lord. You may be asking why give this much Erich. Well we need to understand Why Elijah was a man of confrontation
God was tired of this. God used Elijah to speak His word.
And talk about a Mic Drop, he says before whom I stand there shall be neither dew nor rain these years except by my word. and then he walks out and leaves.
And the word of the Lord came to him: “Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”
Elijah believed that the God of Israel is still alive
Elijah believed he was God’s representative
Elijah believed in God’s Power
All these things right here was his secret to this boldness to spread God’s Truth
Let’s look at the 2nd portrait
Elijah was a man of concealment
So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.
Sometimes we all need to get away. This is why we have vacations right
A little bit of relaxation and rest.
We need to get away from the busyness of life. We sometimes need to just sit back and give our time to God and let Him rejuvenate us.
3rd Portrait
Elijah was a man in crisis
And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
The brook dried up because there was now rain.
Have you ever felt like your brook has dried up?
Have you felt like I’ve had enough of this trial God. I think it’s time to put an end to it. I think. I.
I can’t handle anymore.
What happens though?
I THINK turns into Thank you.
God Develops our faith through trials.
There was something I read this week while doing this study, and it said
See yourself FIRST as a representative of God, and SECOND as a teacher, salesman, pastor, or whatever Job title you hold.
