Outline of Book

Jude 1-4 - Greetings

Jude 1-2 - Introduction
Jude 3-4 - Purpose

Purpose of Jude

Encourage the body to contend for the faith and to address ungodly people who were perverting the Gospel/doctrine

Main Point

Jude writes to these individuals because false teachers have crept into the church and the congregation needs to contend for the faith

Jude 1-2 - Introduction

Jude 1–2 ESV
1 Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James, To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ: 2 May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.

Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James,

Jude
Half-brother of Jesus
Matthew 13:55 ESV
Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
Mark 3:32 ESV
And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.”
Mark 6:3 ESV
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
John 7:1–10 ESV
After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” For not even his brothers believed in him. Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” After saying this, he remained in Galilee. But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private.
Acts 1:14 ESV
All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
A servant of Jesus Christ
Slave - one who is fully committed to another person - total allegiance

② one who is solely committed to another, slave, subject;

Jesus as Christ (Messiah/Anointed One)
Jesus is King & has kingship
Declaring Jesus as the Messiah was necessary in the early church for individuals to have a genuine relationship with God
and a brother of James
Jude and James are brothers
Author of the epistle James
Leader of the Jerusalem church
Acts 15:12–21 ESV
And all the assembly fell silent, and they listened to Barnabas and Paul as they related what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles. After they finished speaking, James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them a people for his name. And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written, “ ‘After this I will return, and I will rebuild the tent of David that has fallen; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will restore it, that the remnant of mankind may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who are called by my name, says the Lord, who makes these things known from of old.’ Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God, but should write to them to abstain from the things polluted by idols, and from sexual immorality, and from what has been strangled, and from blood. For from ancient generations Moses has had in every city those who proclaim him, for he is read every Sabbath in the synagogues.”
Jude begins the epistle not by declaring himself as a brother of Jesus, but instead magnifying the Messiahship of Jesus and his status as Jesus’ slave

To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:

3 characteristics of those who are followers of Jesus:
Called
Status of believers who have been born again and brought into a relationship with God through the person and work of Jesus
Beloved in God the Father
Each follower of Jesus is loved by the Father through the covenant
Romans 5:6–8 ESV
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Kept for Jesus Christ
Each Christ-follower is actively kept by God as they await the future enjoyment of His promises
John 10:22–30 ESV
At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.

Jude 3-4 - Purpose

Jude 3–4 ESV
3 Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation,

Jude’s original purpose in writing was to write about the salvation he shared with these individuals
Common - mutual/shared
Salvation - only attained through the person and redemptive work of Jesus

I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

Jude abandoned his original purpose of writing (common salvation) and instead felt the need to write for them to contend for the faith

Contend

to exert intense effort on behalf of someth., contend.

Delivered

For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation,

This sentence contains five clauses that explain the new purpose in Jude’s writing
Two independent
For certain people have crept in unnoticed (independent) (dependents describe judgment awaiting)
Who were written about long ago for this condemnation (dependent)
Ungodly people (independent) (dependents describe independent)
Who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality (dependent)
And deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ (dependent)
Crept in unnoticed
Condemnation

Ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Pervert

Jesus our Master and Lord

① one who has legal control and authority over persons, such as subjects or slaves, lord, master

Application

We are loved by God the Father

1 Thessalonians 1:4–5 ESV
For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.
2 Thessalonians 2:13 ESV
But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.

Contend for the faith

Each Christ-follower is to contend (exert intense effort) for the faith
We cannot be passive in contending for the faith

Ungodly people will creep in and pervert the grace of God and deny Jesus as Lord/Master

The threat of perverting the Gospel/doctrine is very, very real
False doctrine will destroy the church

Main Point

Jude writes to these individuals because false teachers have crept into the church and the congregation needs to contend for the faith
