Obadiah 7 - Edom Betrayed
All your allies have driven you to your border;
Allies
Covenantal relationship
The noun “friends” is echoed by “allies,” in which the existence of covenantal loyalty is explicitly presupposed (ʾanšê berîtekā; lit., “the men of your covenant”).
1. covenant — a contractual arrangement between God and a person, or between human beings, which required binding action from one or both parties; one party often had higher status in the arrangement.
The language suggests that Edom initiated the covenant with Babylon, but they were not the superior party
Driven you to your border
Edom’s enemies have infiltrated their fortifications and have driven them to the edge of their boundaries
Those at peace with you have deceived you;
Peace
1. peace — harmonious relations and freedom from disputes; especially during the absence of war.
This would typically entail certain concrete obligations, such as mutual nonaggression, military assistance, extradition of rebels and fugitives, and reports of insurrection.
In short, Edom’s covenant partners were supposed to further Edom’s prosperity, security, and orderly way of life (Kalluveettil 1982: 34–35).
Deceived you
1. to deceive — to cause someone to believe an untruth.
The hope of peace is a false hope
They have prevailed against you;
Prevailed
3. to prevail — to prove superior, as in military conflict or some other kind of struggle.
The treaty has been broken
Their allies have forced them to the edge of their borders and now others inhibit their land
Those who eat your bread have set a trap beneath you — you have no understanding.
Eat your bread
The covenant-making process usually climaxed in a meal celebrating the covenant/relationship
Isaac & Abimelech oath
Set a trap
1. ambush — an attacker or group of attackers who wait in a concealed position to launch a surprise attack.
With the trap set, foreigners will inhabit the Edomites land moving forward
No understanding
Edom’s demise will completely rid the land of their heritage
