I. Introduction

1. The Blueprint for Making Disciples - Matthew 28:18-20

2. Real Disciples Follow Jesus Matthew 12:20-26

3. The Path of Discipleship Luke 9:57-62

4. Disciples Learn Christ! Ephesians 4:17-32

Today we will look at the required transformation from what we were as unbelievers to what God intends us to be as disciples of Christ.

In other words, we glimpse a picture in Scripture of what a disciple of Christ actually looks like.

II. Our former condition before we became Christs’ disciples (vs. 4:17–19)

Ephesians 4:17–19 ESV
17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

III. The expectation to “learn” Christ (vs. 4:20–21)

Ephesians 4:20–21 ESV
20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
Definition of “learn” – to gain knowledge or skill by instruction, learn.
Matthew 11:29 ESV
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

IV. The triad of “learning” Christ. (vs. 4:22–24)

Ephesians 4:22–24 ESV
22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

A. Put off your old self.

Definition of “put off” – fig. lay aside, rid oneself of.

1. Former manner of life

2. Corrupt in our desires

B. Be renewed in the spirit of your mind.

Definition of “renewed” – to cause something to become new and different, with the implication of becoming superior—‘to make new, renewal.’
Romans 12:2 ESV
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

C. Put on the new self created after the likeness of God.

Definition of “put on” - metaph., very oft., of the taking on of characteristics, virtues, intentions, etc.
Romans 13:14 ESV
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Romans 3:28 ESV
28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

1. true righteousness

2. holiness (piety, devoutness)

V. Practically “learning” Christ–putting away and putting on! (vs. 4:25–32)

Ephesians 4:25–32 ESV
25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

A. Put away falsehood – Speak the truth

B. Be angry – don’t sin, don’t stay angry giving the devil opportunity

C. Don’t steal - work for what you need and share it with those in need

D. Corrupt talk – speak what is good, edifying and gracious

Definition of corrupt talk – bad or unwholesome to the extent of being harmful, bad, evil, unwholesome.

E. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God who sealed you.

F. Put away all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, slander, and malice.

G. Be kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving of one another as God in Christ forgave you.
