22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
Allegory:
Eye = your perspective - the way you see things
Light = truth
Darkness = lies, falsehood
Body = mind
Light = spirit of God, truth
How the natural eye sees in relationship to light is an allegory to itself.
No wonder Jesus is light and in Him there is no shadow!
My translation:
If your perspective is good, your whole mind is filled with truth. But when your perspective is bad, your whole mind is filled with falsehoods. And if the truth you think you have is actually false, how great that falsehood is!
How can the eye be bad:
eye born defective
trauma hurt it
12 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me.
13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead,
14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
15 Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you.
16 But we must hold on to the progress we have already made.
We started the last time reading to you the obituary of Lesslie Ray “Popeye’ Charping.
What a messed up, dysfunctional man and family.
Came quickly to the conclusion that we are all dysfunction!
We looked at Moses’ statement about the sins of the father and showed you that that means: God punishes children for the sins that they learned from their parents!
God does not give you a free pass just because you learned bad things from your mom and dad!
Why?
Because God made a way for you to be better than your mom and dad!!!
Yet, most stay lost in this endless cycle of pain, hurt and bad decisions.
When you can’t get past your disfunction
you hurt ppl without even knowing that you are!
How do you stop this?
Because your past is NOT a legitimate excuse for your present!
We have a habit as people.
We take the ugly in our lives and lock it away and do our best not to think about it.
Sin and dysfunction hides and grows in the dark!
Hates the light!
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Sin hates light!
Righteousness hates dark!
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Not for others, but for you!
Not public confession, rather confession to those who will and can help you!
First thing you must do is identify the dysfunction.
What actions are YOU taking that cause pain to others?
painful
take time
David’s sin and it’s affects
Multiple wives 8 - at least 10 concubines
Deuteronomy 17:17 (KJV 1900)
17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away...
Adultery with Bathsheba
Murder Uriah
Amnon rape half sister, Tamar
Absalom murdered Amnon
Absalom rebelled against David
Absalom slept with his fathers concubines
Soloman killed his brother/rival Adonijah
Soloman had 700 wives and 300 concubines
His son Reoboam had 18 wives and 60 concubines
Look at the chaos in just two generations!
We see in Davids family a pattern.
We see the sin/dysfunction.
What caused it?
Why was sexual sins such a big deal in Davids family?
What was the trauma to the “eye” of David’s family?
The trauma goes back to Genesis 38.
Horrific story takes place based in lust and incest.
10 generations before!
900 years prior years later David is still stumbling around, grouping through life blinded by what Judah did!
No wonder David would write over and gain inviting God to search him for the hidden, try him, examine him, prove him, know his thoughts!
2. You have to look for these patterns in your life and then identify the trauma or defect that caused them!
Trauma causes patterns.
Counselors call these patters “Cognitive Distortion”.
These are patterns that cause you to react wrong even when you are sure you are right!
How does this happen?
God created our brains to look for patters.
Do you have to think about your morning routine?
NO! You just go through the pattern you established as a kid…
How many have got home and not remembered part of the drive?
How many have went into a lit room and turned the light on anyway?
Out brain establishes patterns so that we do not have to think about some things!
So when you start to discuss _________ with your spouse and you end up in a fight
Your brain has established a pathway/pattern that says this is how you should respond!
16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
This woman was in the middle of a destructive habit/pattern/dysfunction
Choose wrong men
Self destructive
Her perspective was off somewhere!
a. Wrong perspective of men - inherited from her mother’s relationships - born with a defective eye
b. Wrong perspective of marriage - due from trauma to her eye
Made her make wrong decision over and over again!
Dysfunction overrides reason!
Emotions override reality!
What we feel overrides what we know!
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee.
The heart overrides the mind!
Conclusion:
You have to be healed emotionally!
God wants to heal you!
Healing changes your thinking
New pathways/patterns/functions rather than dysfunctions
Identify the hurt
Identify the trauma
3. Control the thoughts
