The Wedding at Cana
2 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. 12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.
A rule I have had for years is: to treat the Lord Jesus Christ as a personal friend. His is not a creed, a mere doctrine, but it is He Himself we have.

Jesus is concerned with what concerns us.

1 Peter 5:6–7 ESV
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
We may find ourselves feeling that God is not concerned with our everyday lives. As we draw lose to him we find he is very active and very involved.

Jesus is focused on redemption.

Some believe that the underlying reality of this miracle is that the “water” of O.T. Judaism must be transformed into the “wine” of Christianity. Donald Guthrie clarifies this point. It is possible therefore that the passage suggests Christ’s power to transform the weakness of Pharisaism into something much stronger.

Jesus is clear on his mission.

Jesus is the redeemer. Jesus’ seeming rebuke of his mother is not a rebuke at all. He is simply stating his work of redemption is not yet to happen.
Jesus’ address of His mother as “woman” (Greek gune) does not sound so harsh in the Greek as in the English. He uses this word to address her in 19:26 where He obviously means to speak with great tenderness. It is significant, however, that He calls her “woman” rather than “mother.” He apparently means to make it clear that He has entered a new stage of His ministry and that His identity as her son has been eclipsed by His identity as Messiah.
