What is your greatest need right now?
Big Idea: Jesus' ultimate work fulfills our ultimate need for forgiveness.

1) Felt needs can move us toward Jesus in whom we find forgiveness. (v. 1-5)

2) Felt needs highlight our ultimate need for forgiveness. (v. 5)

"Healing is a gracious movement of God into the sphere of withering and decay which are the tokens of death at work in a man's life.... Sickness, disease and death are the consequence of the sinful condition of all ment. Consequently every healing is a driving back of death and an invasion of the province of sin. That is why it is appropriate for Jesus to proclaim the remission of sins." (William Lane, The Gospel of Mark, p. 94).

3) Felt needs reveal our heart of faith - or lack thereof - which is essential to receive forgiveness. (v. 5, 6-8)

4) Felt needs must lead us to know the authority of Jesus alone to forgive sins. (v. 9-12)

(Lane) - v. 10 is not a quote of Jesus (he would not have identified himself as the Son of Man so early in his ministry), but rather of Mark to the reader (remember, no quotation marks in Greek). Mark wants US to know that this healing proves his authority to forgive sins.
