Focus Video
There are so many lessons we could sit on in these two chapters of Mark:
Who do you say that I am? (8:27) As the messiah is it necessary for the Son of Man to suffer and Die (8:31) - Recognizing Jesus for who He really is.
Get behind me Satan! (8:33) Deny yourself take up your cross and follow Jesus. (8:34) - Do not be more concerned about the earthly things of this life, but rather that of the things of God.
The Transfiguration of Jesus (9:2-12) The disciples did not know what to say because they were terrified (9:6) When we are confronted with the true Christ we are truly terrified and confused, but we will find peace and comfort in that fear.
If you can? Everything is possible for the one who believes. (9:23) I do believe, help my unbelief! (9:24) This kind can come out by nothing but prayer (9:29) The Power of Prayer and Belief
What were you arguing about on the way? (9:33) If anyone wants to be first he must be last and servant of all (9:35) Jesus is the first and foremost because he indeed is servant of all.
Whoever welcomes one little child such as this in my name welcomes me. (9:37) Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with one another. (9:50) We must welcome those who call upon Jesus and not hinder their works or faith.
The question that is asked, “Why do we cover a lot of material?” My desire to cover a large amount of scripture is that I desire to inspire us personally and in our families to dig in to our own study of the Bible to go deep so we can slow down and meditate deeply on his word. So then when we get stuck we can come together ask questions and seek to understand the scriptures as they apply to our lives better.
I would have to take six weeks to cover this material, but we only gather once a week to cover just one section to go deep. I want to highlight these points in scripture becasue they help us in training and teaching in righteousness.
Three Focuses (Foci?)
Three Focuses (Foci?)
So as I was wrestling with this I started to see that there are three focuses that we are to have as followers of Christ that we must be aware of. I have to say that these three focuses are nothing new or original with me, but it was one of my chaplain who discipled me as he was working through some of his lessons each week. There are the upward, inward, and outward focus. The upward focus, we focus on God and who he is and what he desires for us. The inward focus where we assess our heart. Finally, the outward focus where we ask if we are at peace with others.
Often our focus is often singular -
Upward
Upward
Who do you say that I am? (8:27)
Jesus as messiah
Our salvation from Sin - so that we may be with him with ourselves and others
Inward
Inward
If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. (8:34)
Deny, Self, Take up Cross
Everything is possible for the one who believes. (9:23)

Outward
Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with one another. (9:50)
