Exodus 34:5–9 ESV

The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped. And he said, “If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, please let the Lord go in the midst of us, for it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”

Introduction. “God’s Grace and Mercy: The Power of Love!” Tell a brief story from Les Misérables The story of Jean Valjean, his criminal past, and the grace and mercy of the Bishop. Jean Valjean was released from prison to get a new start; and is graciously housed by the Bishop. Valjean would steal may items from the Bishop and would go on the run. When the police catch him and returns him to the Bishop; the Bishop says that he gifted the items to Valjean.

Valjean was blown away by this act of kindness, even though he took advantage of the Bishop and stole from him; the Bishop is merciful! His mercy keeps Valjean from getting what he deserves (going back to jail) and allows him to gain a new start in his life.

We see God doing this in our text. He has delivered the people, answered their prayers and they still disobeyed. Instead of death, they receive deliverance. Instead of punishment, they were on their way to paradise; why? It was the grace of God. God is full of mercy and grace, don’t take Him for granted!

I. God’s GRACE (Exodus 34:6) “His compassion for People”

(1) He heard their cry in Egypt. God delivered them out of bondage and slavery under Pharoah.

(2) He Heard their complaints in walking through the wilderness. They complained about the manna from heaven; and about not having water. God’s compassion causes Him to supply their need; and He continues to supply the needs of His people. That’s good news, God hears your cry. He hears you when you can’t sleep at night because life has become so heavy. He knows what you are going through, and sooner or later he’s going to work things out in your favor. God said he would never leave you or forsake you. God has compassion!

waking me up this morning

in my right mind

you drove your self into worship

money in your pocket

answering Prayer

psalm 103says

he heals all my disease

redeems my life from the pit

satisfies me with God

crowns me with steadfast love

The power of God’s Grace will provide for you!

II. God’s Mercy! (Exodus 34:6) “His goodness towards People” God Mercy is something most scholars can’t understand. He is kind to those unkind to Him

(1) God’s kindness to forgives as they worship idols

(2) God’s kindness to forgive as they complained against him

(3) God’s kindness to forgive in their lack of faith in Him!

God’s mercy gives me what I don’t deserve.

Story of Daniel jumping in the pool. . when i told him not to. I jumped in to save him with all my clothes on.

He deserved harsh word yet he recieved: How are you are you ok,

The Power of God’s Mercy will cover you!

III. God’s Love! (Exodus 34:6-7) “His patience towards People” God’s love for the people made Him respond in a new way! Love is a funny thing; it makes you respond to foolishness a little differently. Some of you are like the prophet Al Green: Love will make you do right, love will make you do wrong. Next month is going to be full of people doing crazy things because of Love.

God’s love is like this. God’s Love causes Him to be slow to anger and withhold Wrath and Judgement. He told them not to worship idols (sin), they did the opposite. The Bible says the wages of sin is death; however, God’s Love gave them life.

His love is not like our love

This is no ordinary love

Is there anybody on the scene and on the screen who can testify that God is slow to anger. God kept you when you were out in the world doing all manner of ungodliness. But praise be to God he protected me from the enemy: those coming against me; when I was my own worst enemy on a path of self-destruction!!! God didn’t take me out but gave me chance after chance! I thank God that He Loves me.

The power of God’s Love will overwhelm you !

Im so glad he loves me. . i dont know why he loves me at . . but one thing i know is that im his and and he is mine!!!

It reminds of the story Of Hosea and Gomer

Hosea kept going after his wife.. she would leave him for someone else. . time and time again.

he kept going back because of his great love

I I I am so glad this morning. God keeps coming after me

even when i stray away. . he keeps on doing great things for me

even when i get set in the ways of the world… he keeps on making a way for me.

That’s all i got this morning

God’s love will overwhelm you

I. Conclusion

Our Response (Exodus 34:8) Moses bowed down in worship. He recognizes that although his and the people’s Sin were many; God’s Mercy is more.

Romans 12:1-2 “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

We need God’s Grace to cover us

We need God’s Mercy to hold us together

We need His Love to Keep us alive
