Identity and Authority

Opening Discussion
What does the Bible say about our identity in Christ?
What does the world say about our identity?
What lies do you often believe about your own identity?
Background
Right before this passage in Romans 8:9
Romans 8:9 ESV
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
Paul finished saying that the Spirit of God dwells in us
History of the Temple/Holy of Holies/Veil
Acts 17:24–25 ESV
The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
The veil has been removed through Jesus, 2 Corinthians 3:14-17
2 Corinthians 3:14–17 ESV
But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
God no longer lives in temples made by man, Acts 17:24-25
Acts 17:24–25 ESV
The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
And we as His children are his temple, 1 Corinthians 3:16
1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
Who are we in Christ?
Romans 8:12–14 ESV
So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
What does it mean that we are not debtors to the flesh?
What is the key to putting to death the flesh?
What does that look like?
What have we been Given?
Romans 8:15–17 ESV
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
What is Fear?
A spirit
2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
What is slavery?
A spirit (Verse 15)
There is also a spirit of the world 1 Corinthians 2:12
1 Corinthians 2:12 ESV
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.
Give Context of the History behind adoption in the Roman Empire (Vs. 15)
Verses 16 and 17 tell us we are children, heirs, co-heirs
We have been given authority over all darkness Luke 10:19
Luke 10:19 ESV
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.
The enemy only has authority over us when we give up the authority that we have been given
We only give up our authority when we do not know or believe our identity in Christ
This is why the enemy works so hard to come after our Identity and why it’s so important for us to be grounded in who God calls us
Homework: Download Bible and and Memorize 1 verse that can be used to combat lies that the enemy tends to throw at you in a particular area
