Well it seems like you’ve either got it or you’re trying to get it right? But you know what they say…
Mo money, mo problems.
the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
cash is king.
money can’t buy happiness.
Money can make people do some crazy things!
In fact, who in here will come up and sing and do motions to I’m a Little Tea Pot for all the cash in my wallet? Some of y’all didn’t hear my trick last week!
But seriously, $5. Who wants it? Got to do the motions, whole song, into the microphone. And everyone can get there phones out to record.
People act goofy for money! But we have to have more wisdom about our money than goofy, because money really can do a lot for us, good or bad…
I know y’all are really having to worry a whole lot about money yet, but it’s good for you to go ahead and start gaining wisdom so you’re ready for that day. Don’t want to be like these pro athletes who fizzle out… You want to have wisdom about money.
PRAY

Money just isn't worth that much!

Valuing Money

We need to have a biblical value of money.
There’s a raccoon trap that people use to make where they’d dig a small hole in the ground and put something shiny in it and then put two pins in the hole. The little trash panda would see and want that shiny little piece and reach in the little hole with an open hand to grab it, but then when they have it in their little fist, they can’t pull it back out. For some reason they value shiny stuff so much that they won’t let it go and they just sit there and hold it until someone comes and catches them!
Proverbs 3:14–15 ESV
for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her.
Remember we talked a minute ago about how much money can do for you. Wisdom can do more for you. Cash is not worth the effort, concern, love, idolization that so many people give to it.
So many people convince themselves that if they can get a job with a lot of money then they’ll be good to go.
Proverbs 11:28 ESV
Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.
Worldly riches make a terrible foundation for your life. They can be lost quickly…
We need to value things of eternal value above the things of this world.
Proverbs 16:16 ESV
How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.
Without wisdom, we will be irresponsible with money. Our priorities will be off. We will miss the things that are truly valuable busting our butts for things that aren’t. If money is your goal, then you’re never going to feel content.
John Rockefeller was one of the richest people in the world when he was alive. He was asked once how much money was enough. His answer was, “Just a little more.”
We need to have a wise valuation of money. This will mean we are also wise about the next thing we’re looking at…

Getting Money

There is a wise way to make money and an unwise way.

Proverbs 10:2 ESV
Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death.
Proverbs 11:18 ESV
The wicked earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward.
Someone who makes their money through wickedness, through sin, whether it be dishonesty or robbery or crime, doesn’t have a steady and reliable income…
That’s why we have this proverb…
Proverbs 16:8 ESV
Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues with injustice.
On the other side of the coin, an honest living is more reliable.
Proverbs 15:6 ESV
In the house of the righteous there is much treasure, but trouble befalls the income of the wicked.
“house” here is the idea of a storehouse, so the righteous person is more able to put up and save up than the wicked, unwise.
So work honest to earn money. And work hard to earn money.
Proverbs 14:23 ESV
In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.
Work hard and be responsible with your job. Take good care of your means of making money. This is what Solomon is talking about in
Proverbs 27:23–27 ESV
Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, for riches do not last forever; and does a crown endure to all generations? When the grass is gone and the new growth appears and the vegetation of the mountains is gathered, the lambs will provide your clothing, and the goats the price of a field. There will be enough goats’ milk for your food, for the food of your household and maintenance for your girls.
I know that’s kind of a weird passage, so I’ll explain it.
You could think of it like this: If you get a job as a Door Dash driver, don’t make some money and then go blow all your money on silly stuff and goof around. Make sure your vehicle is in good shape, save some money to take care of it in case you need to. If you ignore caring for your car and don’t put money back into it, then when you blow all your money and your car breaks down, you have no way to make more money!
So overall, Proverbs tells us this about making money: It’s better to be an honest, hard worker than a rich sleaze ball.
Proverbs 22:1 ESV
A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.

A couple other things about money.

Related to what we just talked about,
Proverbs 28:8 ESV
Whoever multiplies his wealth by interest and profit gathers it for him who is generous to the poor.
Don’t take advantage of people.
Debt isn’t great.
Proverbs 22:7 ESV
The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.
There is some debt that is just about unavoidable…
Some debt can work for you…
Then there is some debt that is bad news…
Young men, this last one is for you.
Proverbs 31:10 ESV
An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
So many people in our world put their hope for happiness and contentment in money, and we do this because we are sinful. We are trying to use a created thing to make us feel complete when only a relationship with our Creator can do that. The only way you’re going to have the relationship with money that you’re supposed to is by first having a relationship with your Creator like you’re supposed to.
Our relationship with our Creator is broken through sin. Sin says that money can fill that hole in your life, but it can’t. Only a relationship with God through Jesus can.
If you’re tired of trying to find joy in money or what money can buy you or any created thing, I’d love to tell you why Jesus is what you’re really looking for!
