Text - 2 Peter 1.20-21
20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,
21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
Title - Men and Women that Can be Moved by the Holy Spirit
Background
Background
The apostle Peter warned against private interpretation of the Scripture
private interpretation is drawing conclusions as to the meaning of the Scripture based on one’s understanding or reasoning
why?
because prophecy did not come by the will of man
because prophecy were spoken (and written) by men who were moved by the Holy Spirit
Main Point
Main Point
Throughout history God always worked through men and women.
But God does not use just about any man or woman. He wants men and women that can be moved by His Spirit.
God does not - and cannot - use men that cannot be moved by His Spirit.
If the Spirit of God cannot move you, then God cannot use you!
If the Spirit of God cannot move the church, then God cannot use that church anymore!
A man that cannot be moved by the Holy Spirit is of no use to God
A man that cannot be moved by the Holy Spirit is of no use to God
If a man cannot be moved by the Holy Spirit, he will not be empowered.
God always moves and works through the Holy Spirit
In creation
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
In Christ
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
In the Church
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
If a man cannot be moved by the Holy Spirit, he will not be sanctified.
Isaiah was sanctified by the fire from the altar of God - Isa 6.5
If a man cannot be moved by the Holy Spirit, he will have to rely on his/her human strength and abilities to do the works of God.
Zerubbabel was reminded how the work is to be accomplished
6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.
even designers in the tabernacle were anopinted by the Spirit of God
1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.
3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,
4 to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze,
5 in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship.
The moving of the Holy Spirit is not a one time experience
this is not yhe baptism of the H. S. that you received at the beginning
the word “moved” in 2 Pet 1:21 is PHERO
carry, uphold, bring along, sustain, drive
it indicates a continuing action and movement
Any work that is not marked by the moving of the Holy Spirit does not belong to God - it is not God’s work
Any work that is not marked by the moving of the Holy Spirit does not belong to God - it is not God’s work
Illustration - any object that has been touched by fire are either
warm or hot
smoke
smells burned
shows burn, or
turned to ashes
A work of God has been touched by the Spirit of God!
heaven and earth - the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the deep
Israel - the pillar of fire and cloud covered them by day and night
Christ - the Spirit of God dwelt in Him
the Church - filled and moved by the Holy Spirit
children of God - led by the Spirit of God
The presence of the Spirit of God means God is at work!
If God is at work in the last days, there must be men and women whose lives are moved by the Holy Spirit
If God is at work in the last days, there must be men and women whose lives are moved by the Holy Spirit
Not everyone can be moved by the Holy Spirit.
Reasons -
people’s unbelief
Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.
some men are stubborn and resisting
51 “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you.
God is grieved with their lives
sinful activities
defilement from the world
Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened,
That it cannot save;
Nor His ear heavy,
That it cannot hear.
But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
And your sins have hidden His face from you,
So that He will not hear.
For your hands are defiled with blood,
And your fingers with iniquity;
Your lips have spoken lies,
Your tongue has muttered perversity.
unresponsive to His call
they do not respond to the call for worship
they are not moved by the song
they are not moved by the preaching
they are not moved by the calls to repent, to surrender their lives to God, to say yes to God’s word
they are not responsive God’s call to prayer
they are not in the right place
Jesus directed His disciples to wait in the city of Jerusalem
the disciples remained in the teaching and fellowship of the apostles
The Spirit of God will only move in our lives IF we will allow Him!
The work of God is only visible because there are men and women who allowed their lives to be moved by the Holy Spirit.
20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
Conclusion
Conclusion
We can be the men and women that the Holy Spirit can move and work with in the last days!
