Introduction:

Years ago, at St. Mark’s, one of our men’s groups decided to invite a professional fisherman to give a presentation to the group, plus anyone else who wanted to join. The fisherman agreed to come. I can’t truly remember his name, he wasn’t world famous are anything, but his job was fishing. That is what he did. He survived on the award money he received from the various competitions as well as the speaking engagements. That is to say, he knew a lot more about fishing than most people.
I was helping the group run the table at the entrance to church, so I didn’t get a chance to listen in, however, I remember talking to several people as they were leaving, and it was truly interesting to hear what they had to say. Some of the people coming out were mesmerized by the very idea of fishing for a living, I mean, fishing. This guy got up in the morning and his big responsibility was to go fishing. Other people found it entertaining, but not very practical, I mean, this guy was using equipment that was either still in an experimental state so you couldn’t even get it, or he was using equipment that was out of reach, at least in that caliber for those that were not independently wealthy. And for a few others, it completely changed the way they viewed fishing as a whole. They had always thought about fishing in one way, but listening to him talk about his methodologies, his thoughts and the how’s and whys of what he does caused them to think and act differently.
