Genesis 37:12-36.

Last week we started this discussion of Joseph,
we established he was the favorite
and that his brothers hated him for that
we also saw his dreams that lead to them hating him more
let’s jump straight into verse 12

Now his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem, 13 and Israel said to Joseph, “As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them.”

“Very well,” he replied.

14 So he said to him, “Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me.” Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron.

When Joseph arrived at Shechem, 15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, “What are you looking for?”

16 He replied, “I’m looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?”

17 “They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’ ”

So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan. 18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

19 “Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. 20 “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.

So at the request of his father, Joseph goes to check on his brothers.
When he gets to the place where they are, they see him coming and plotted to kill him
I would say that all of us have had family drama at some point
I’ve known brothers to get into fist fights
a group of brothers plotting to kill their brother because of their own jealousy of him, is a pretty rare and crazy thing
They couldn’t stand the favoritism
they despised the dreams he had.
so they want to kill him and lie about it, just to show his dreams will be untrue.
vs. 21

When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life,” he said. 22 “Don’t shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe he was wearing—24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

Joseph’s oldest brother Reuben doesn’t want Joseph to actually be killed.
So, his plan is to throw him into a cistern in the wilderness.
Often cistern is confusing to us, because it is not a common thing for us.
(difference between well and cistern)
So Joseph comes and they strip that robe they are jealous of off of him,
and they through him in this dry cistern.
vs. 25

As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.

26 Judah said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood? 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood.” His brothers agreed.

28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

After throwing him in they go and sit down to eat.
as they ate, they saw this caravan come through
then the light bulb goes off for Judah
we can sell him to the Ishmaelites and not have to kill him
He would be gone and we get paid right?
So they did just that
they pulled him out and sold him for 20 shekels of silver
What is that in today’s financial market?
it is hard to say as weights have varied so much.
it seems like at most it would be less than $350
doesn’t seem like a lot of money to sell your family member into slavery.
vs. 29

When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes. 30 He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”

31 Then they got Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood. 32 They took the ornate robe back to their father and said, “We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son’s robe.”

Reuben wasn’t there when they sold him
When he returned he tore his clothes in despair.
So the brothers set up a deception by taking Joseph's special robe, putting goat blood on it
They take it to dear old dad to get him to identify it so he can believe that his son had died.
vs. 33

He recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces.”

34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days. 35 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said, “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave.” So his father wept for him.

As any father would be, Jacob is highly upset when he finds out
he enters into a deep state of mourning over the loss of his own son
vs. 36

Meanwhile, the Midianites r sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard.

As Jacob is mourning, having no idea
and the brothers are likely internally celebrating
because they got rid of joseph and they believe they have now gotten away with it,
Joseph’s non importance to people at this point is being made clear
And God is moving through his plan t use him
Joseph is sold to Egypt to one of Pharaoh’s officials.
So, let’s break this down a little.
the indication is that initially all but one brother wants to kill him
but they do not
The Midianite traders came along at just the right time
Reuben happened to not be there to prevent the brothers from selling Joseph
then Joseph is taken to Egypt at just the right time for what is next
Sold to just the right person
These things coming together are no accident
God had a plan
Joseph was not in the know of this plan and neither were any of the brothers
often we face difficult times and we do not recognize that God has a plan
Sometimes we have to go through these things to step towards God’s plan
Hold strong in your faith and trust in Him.
His plans are always right and always good
even when we don’t see it.
