Mark 8:1–9 NKJV
1 In those days, the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them, 2 “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.” 4 Then His disciples answered Him, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?” 5 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” 6 So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude. 7 They also had a few small fish; and having blessed them, He said to set them also before them. 8 So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments. 9 Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away,
Faith According to Jesus
Less talked about Miracle
Differences Between the feeding miracles:
Crowds are different sizes.
The audience is different.
The location is different.
The numbers of loaves and fish are different.
The baskets are different.
Jesus spent 1 day with the feeding of the five thousand and three days with the 4000.
The Number of leftover baskets are different.
Object Lesson on Faith
I like this story because once again in giving us an object lesson of faith Jesus showed His
Jesus’ Object Lesson on Faith:
His Compassion - He sees Your Need
His Provision - He Acts on Your Need
His Power - He supplies Your Need in ways beyond what we expect and imagine.
IN SHORT - HE CAN STILL PERFORM A MIRACLE IN YOUR LIFE!
Mark 8:1–3 NKJV
1 In those days, the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them, 2 “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.”
The multitude being very great, 4000 most likely just the men..
On the other occasion, Mark said Jesus had compassion on the people because they were like sheep without a shepherd.. The compassion of Jesus.. (we talk a lot about it)
We may miss this insight about the compassion of the Lord..
He verbalized it — it was a deep sense of care for them that He had to let the words out.
Last week - there was a line outside of people waiting to get food.. how do you think Jesus would see them? talk
Second thing we have to notice about Jesus compassion:
He said “I have compassion on the multitude because they have now continued with me three days and have nothing to eat.”
Did you catch what is amazing here;
Three days - a retreat
In those three days, Jesus saw their need — they have been with me — of course Lord, you are my King — if I were with this crowd my family and I will stay with you forever, it is I who already benefit people pay and fly to a place --- they have continued with me for three days, I have to watch over their welfare..
You see what I am saying — these people have been hearing the greatest teaching for three days, imagine the spiritual nourishment they are getting — we should be paying you back Jesus..
“they continued with me for three days, I have to feed them” - The grace of God.
If Lord cares bout your physical needs, He cares deeply about what remains broken in your life — sickness, emotional distress, relational issues, the turmoil of your soul..
Lessons:
If you seek the Lord for your spiritual well-being, He will take care of the rest of you.
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
He will, He is compassionate and He is passionate in His determination to save.
Notice this too, in those three days, that the people were with the Lord (although He saw the hunger and the weariness in these multitudes), who do you think did all the work?
Jesus should be the one severely exhausted.
Jesus always put the interest of others above Himself.
2. Don’t let fear of your present situation make you forget what God has done in the past.
Mark 8:4 NKJV
4 Then His disciples answered Him, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?”
This is another O Ye of little faith moment..
Seems to be a valid question except that “hey disciples, didn’t Jesus just feed the five thousand?”
This number is even less than my previous miracle.
Unbelievable. Maybe they were also tired and weary...
Don’t let the size of the multitude before you make you forget how big God is! (talk)
Mark 8:5 NKJV
5 He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”
Jesus must have said: “Oh my favorite number, I like that number” — step aside and let me do this again:
So you know the rest of the story:
Jesus broke and blessed the bread and fish, gave to His disciples to set before the multitude..
Mark 8:8–9 NKJV
8 So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments. 9 Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away,
Seven large baskets - Again the number seven, the number of perfection.
FInal lesson:
3. The Lord uses His disciples to give to the world what He has perfected, blessed and multiplied.
The Food in this food bank is already blessed by the Lord to multiply its effects on the lives of the people.
The food is only a tool to reach the multitudes with the Gospel. But we were entrusted to be good stewards of what the Lord has multiplied.
The real food we offer is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the eternal food that the Son of God offers. Author and perfecter of our faith.
John 6:27 NKJV
27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
Food is not the only perishable item that man chooses over God. Money.
Another insight, our own supply will eventually run out — turn to Jesus and receive from His never ending supply...
