Last week we spoke about how the world and everything going on is not ultimately about us, but instead we should live for God’s glory.
The whole universe was meant to display God’s glory, and its why He made us, and this is why we only find real fulfillment in doing and living for God.
So the question is how can we live for God? Or what does it mean to live for God?
1 Peter 4:1-6
Verse 1:
Peter is speaking that since Christ has come and lived and suffered as a man for us, and yet was victorious over sin, we should have the same mindset.
This isn’t just referring to how horrible the cross was, but to every single temptation and struggle you could possibly have.
Despite it all Jesus was victorious, and when we believe and trust in Jesus’s work on the cross, God promises to free us from the hold of sin on our life.
Peter is saying that since we have victory in Jesus, we who really follow Him are finished with sin.
This means that if we are following Jesus we will be trying to let go of our old sins and trying to be more obedient.
Verse 2
And the whole point of us letting go of those sins is so that we may live for God and find that real life fulfillment.
To support and give a little background to what Peter is saying he lists the old ways of life for the people he was writing to, and saying there already been enough time wasted living that way.
Verse 3-4
Peter just gave a run through of some of the most basic sins you could be dealing with, and says you’ve wasted enough of your time living that way, now that you have Christ, live this way.
Peter recognizes the way the people who are actually living for Jesus are being treated. If you are really living for Christ you’re going to be treated differently. People will slander you, but its up to you to decide who do you serve.
Verse 5-6
Ultimately the people who are against God, they just like everyone else are going to be judged, for everyone is going to be judged according to the flesh, meaning everyone will die one day, but only those who have heard and responded to this glorious gospel will be saved.
