Notes from Reading:
Week 1 - Worship as a Way of Life
Worship is a way of life, not a ceremony. It’s a path to follow, not a place to go. Experiencing true worship starts long before sunday morning, and continues long after.
John 4:21–24 NIV
“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
Jesus taught that the true answer to ‘how to properly worship’ wasn’t going to be where, it was going to be how - in Spirit and in truth.
We hunger for meaningful worship experiences. But they need to involve our hearts, minds, souls, and strength.
Mark 12:30 NIV
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
We want to worship in God’s house, where God dwells. In His holy temple. But God has made it clear where He considers His temple to be, and where His Spirit still resides.
1 Corinthians 3:16 NIV
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
Week 2 - Fill Up to Pour Out
Real worship is an outflow - us exalting God. Giving our lives fully and completely to Him.
Romans 12:1 NIV
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
This means that our real approach to worship is found in offering whoever we are, wherever we are, whenever it is, to God
And this goes beyond what makes us feel it on the outside!
Habakkuk 3:17–18 NIV
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.
A heart of worship is dedicated to singing TO God, not just ABOUT God.
Psalm 103:1 NIV
Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
True worship isn’t found in the quality of experience coming in - it’s found in the quality of expression coming out
True and proper worship is an outflow / continuation of what has been happening in our lives all week long. We don’t start worship on sundays - we continue in it.
--------------------------
For worship leaders: We understand that people are by default drawn to particular styles of worship. But we need to move the debate from ‘style’ and ‘what people prefer’ to ‘What God wants from us in worship’.
For worship leaders: ‘A worship leader should be able to hear and interpret the heart of God. It’s not just an issue of providing music. It is about seeing into the heart of God, hearing, and then bringing that to the people and helping them respond to that. Our mandate is to please God, not the masses. We must not allow people to make us into the image that is in their mind concerning worship.’
For worship leaders: ‘The primary responsibility of the church is to foster worship in the congregational experience so that our members continue to worship genuinely in their daily lives’.
For worship leaders: ‘Being committed to unity in the body of Christ means that you are open to experiencing different forms and s tyles of worship. It is healthy for Christians to consider ways in which they can connect with people who are much different from them and reflect their love for God in ways that are often outside their comfort zone’
For worship leaders: ‘Take the time to listen for God to reveal his intentions for the body in worship - it will ultimately lead you into a fuller expression of his style for you and the people in your care’.
For worship leaders: We need to be saying the same thing to the people that God is - and inviting them to respond. This will generate real worship.
