Maybe this discussion was prompted by the fact that Jesus only took Peter, James, and John up on the mountain of Transfiguration.
Verse 32 - They were afraid to ask Him probably because they remembered how Jesus rebuked Peter.
Maybe they were afraid to ask because the more you know the more it hurts.
What Jesus is predicting is so different from what they wanted the Messiah to be.
In that culture matters of rank were very important.
Jesus did not condemn the desire to improve one’s position in life but He did teach that greatness in His kingdom was not determined by status but by service
