The Romance Of Ruth Part 1

The Advancement of the Romance vv 7-9

1.) The Patience of Ruth v7

Both Ruth and Boaz showed great patience in starting their relationship.

Ruth wanted to see what kind of man he was and he wanted to wait until she had finished her time of morning for her late husband.

Had Ruth picked the wrong time to approach him it could have repulsed him rather than bringing him into a relationship.

Often times jumping in too quick can cause more problems and heart aches than we care to have.

2.) The Prudence of Ruth v7

She came softly

She came softly what she was doing did not need a lot of fan fair or people watching.

often times its the little things that make the biggest impacts in your relationship.

Not all gestures that you do for your husband or wife should end up on social media.

She came submissively

Ruth did everything just as her mother-in-law told her to do it even though she may not have understood it at the time.

Her submission to the proper way of doing this custom was very important, straying just a little would have ruined the whole thing.

This is the same way we must submit to God. often times we may not understand what He’s doing or why but we must submit and follow His will and if we are able to do this then we will have great blessings along the way,

3.) The Perplexity of Boaz v 8-9a

The alarm in the Perplexity

There were two reasons for Boaz to be alarmed when he woke up at midnight

The Grain

He was worried someone might be stealing his grain that he just got done harvesting.

this was the main reason why people would sleep at the threshing floor to begin with.

it would be very easy for someone to just come up and steal a bushel full of grain and no one would ever know.

A girl

often times during these threshing events there was a lot of wine being passed around and often times the “women of the night” would come out to the threshing floor to take advantage of men who may have had to much to drink or who have been in the field for to long.

Boaz asked who the girl was and why she was there.

The excellence in his alarm

This further goes to show the character of Boaz

some men would not have been alarmed at this they would have had their way with the girl and just went back to sleep.

If we have a relationship with Christ we will have enough of an instinct to know when we are in a bad situation or when we are doing something wrong.

The asking in the Perplexity

Boaz wanted to know who and what he was dealing with.

often times we need to ask our selves the same questions about people in our lives.

Why is this person here, what do they want,

Why are we doing this, why this way or is there a better way?

often times we need more questions and more answers.

4.) The Petition in the Advancing v 9b

The Preface to the Petition

We need to know why this petition was made.

A.) The Necessity

Boaz needed to be told who she was because it was dark and he could not see.

She had to identify herself because if she didn’t what she said next would be useless.

Had she not told Boaz who she was he would have probably rejected any advances from anyone else.

B.) The Humility

Ruth did not identify herself as a special person but as his servant showing that even though she wanted to be his wife she was coming as humbly as she could.

She called herself his “servant” or “handmade”

She did not use his budding feelings for her to gain any advantage but remained humble as she had been through this whole story.

The Peculiarity of the Petition

This whole scene is strange to us because this is not the way that we purpose marriage at all.

This was also different for this time as well

For the most part the pairing of a couple would happen between a couples parents.

The Purpose of the Petition

Ruth knew that Boaz was a redeemer for her family and that is why she was coming to him with this request.

The reason that Ruth made the petition was because it was the widows responsibility to seek out the kinsman redeemer for a levirate marriage.

Deuteronomy 25:7-10

Deuteronomy 25:7–10 ESV

And if the man does not wish to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate to the elders and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to perpetuate his brother’s name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’ Then the elders of his city shall call him and speak to him, and if he persists, saying, ‘I do not wish to take her,’ then his brother’s wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face. And she shall answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.’ And the name of his house shall be called in Israel, ‘The house of him who had his sandal pulled off.’

The Picture in the Petition

This petition that Ruth is making to Boaz is a picture of who a sinner should come to Christ for Salvation.

she came humbly

we are to come to Christ the same way nothing that we do will ever be good enough to earn salvation.

she came submissively

we need to submit to Christs will for our lives.

she came needfully

we need salvation with out it we die and go to hell.

she came expectantly

we must have the expectation of salvation if we ask for it.

Now may He who has rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

Fill you with all knowledge so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work, increasing in the knowledge of God.
