Background
Apostles just healed a man who had been lame for over 40 years.
Everybody knew this man, so this was a certified, verified miracle!
Peter saw a great opportunity to preach and took it.
Arrested by the powers that be, because of them teaching about resurrection
Sadducees did not believe in that, ulterior motives
Spiritual result was salvation of more people . . . in reality over 10K because of women, children
all big wheels are there . . .
explain yourself!!!
filled with Holy Spirit . . .
I thought he was already filled? . . .
more on that later
v. 8-11 Peter speaks about Jesus (who you crucified)
v. 13-18
they saw how confident Peter and John was, recognized they had been disciples of Jesus
they could not refute the miracle
never considered believing in Jesus
is there some area of your life that you never considered having faith in: giving, lifestyle
they just threatened them to stop preaching about Jesus
last person they threatened, they crucified
Peter: we will not stop spreading the news about Jesus, we must obey God
v. 21-23
they were threatened again
Peter and John went back and told fellow Christians what happened
in the midst of this trouble, they begin to pray . . .
imagine that
v 25 - 28
use scripture in their prayer
recognize that this threat is real . . .
killed Jesus
What did they pray for?
confidence, boldness . . .
more signs and wonders
What would we pray for?
enemies to be defeated, don’t let threats come to pass
When they prayed, they prayed for the most important thing . . .
power to become Jesus’ witnesses
back to all filled with the Holy Spirit
When you truly accept Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to live in you
He is in you, like your body is a temple where the presence of God is
What made this possible?
- bought with a price (Jesus suffer, bled, and died on the cross)
the Spirit takes us residence, but he does not take over, but he wants to take over
Examples:
he can be disappointed, hurt, by your actions
Don’t shut him down, keep him under wraps
Think of inviting someone to live with you, who is in control?
who makes the house rules, who decides the temperature, who has the master bed-room?
in our lives there is a battle between the Spirit and the flesh over who will be in control
to be filled with the Spirit implies freedom for Him to occupy every part of our lives, guiding and controlling us.
The spirit decides the house rules
indwelling, the spirit takes residence
filled, the Spirit takes over as president
that’s why Paul was always encouraging Christians to walk by spirit
let the spirit be in control
comparison to alcohol
be filled with the Holy Spirit the way people get filled with alchohol
the more you drink , the more the alcohol is in control
the more you pray, study, obey yield . . . the more the Spirit will be in control
so the disciples are seeking God’s will, totally . . .
not even worried about threats, but their reaction to the threats
when they yielded control, the Holy Spirit took control
and what did the Holy Spirit empower them to do?
speak with boldness
What have we seen the Holy Spirit do so far
cause people to speak in languages they had not learned
miracles were happening in the church
healed a lame man
gave peter words to say to church leaders
now gives them boldness
v. 32-37 talks about how everyone is sharing with each other
one guy named Barnabas must have given a lot, we will see him later
