Evil Forces-

The Flesh 2. The World 3. Satan/Devil
Last time we were together we talked about the flesh, today we will look at “the world” and “Satan”
The word WORLD in the new testament is usually the Greek word Kosmos
We have to be careful to make sure we are looking at the context correctly
Kosmos can mean the following:
The universe created by God with design and order (Matt 13:55, Jn 17:24)
The planet earth (Jn 11:9)
The total of mankind (Matt 5:14, Jn 3:16)
The total of human existence in this present life (Matt 16:26, 1 Cor 4:13)
Then it means the following and what we will be exploring today.
The world order which is alienated from God, in rebellion against Him, and condemned by nature and by godless deeds!
The ruler of this world Satan. (Jn 14:30) (Jn 12:31) (Jn 16:11)
The whole world is under the control of Satan. (1 Jn 5:19)
The believer is regarded as dead to the world. (James 1:27)
Friendship with the world is enmity toward God. (James 4:4)
Relationship with the world is an indicator of relationship with God! (1 Jn 2:16)
The world and its lure of desires and lust are transient, passing away, but the doer of God’s word abides forever. (1 Jn 2:17, 2 Cor 4:18)

The discourse of JESUS on the night before his crucifixion contains a lot of teaching on this subject about the WORLD.

This world can not receive the Spirit of Truth. (Jn 14:17) Referring to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit in unnoticed by the unsaved because they do not have a spiritual life.
Christ gives a peace which the world cannot give or understand. (Jn 14:27)
The world’s hatred of God is also directed against the followers of Christ. (Jn 15:18-21)
Although the followers of Christ have tribulation “in this world” they are to be of good cheer, for Jesus has overcome the world. (Jn 16:33)

SO WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE “WORLD”? THE BIBLE MAKES IT VERY CLEAR!

1. The world of mankind is estranged from God, BUT can be reconciled to Him. (2 Cor 5:17-21)
2. The world is at enmity with God and is condemned. (Jn 3:18-21)
3. without God and without HOPE. (Eph. 2:12)
4. Jesus came to redeem mankind from “the present evil age” (Gal 1:4)
5. and to free mankind from the “slavery under the basic principles of the world” (Gal 4:3)
