Introduction

There are many James in the New Testament
James the brother of John
James the less
Neither of these is the James of this book
James the half brother of Jesus
James the half-brother of Jesus is the author of this book
In all likelihood, he was the oldest sibling of Jesus - Matthew 13:55-56
Matthew 13:55–56 KJV 1900
Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?
During the earthly ministry of Jesus, James was not a fan, supporter, follower or believer in Jesus as the Son of God and Messiah - John 7:1-5
John 7:1–5 KJV 1900
After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand. His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. For neither did his brethren believe in him.
However, some time after the crucifixion of Jesus, James became a devout believer in Jesus
1 Corinthians 15:7
1 Corinthians 15:7 KJV 1900
After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
Acts 1:14
Acts 1:14 KJV 1900
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
Before the Book of Acts transitions to Paul, James appears to be a pillar, if not the lead elder at the church of Jerusalem
Acts 12:17
Acts 12:17 KJV 1900
But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
Galatians 2:8-9
Galatians 2:8–9 KJV 1900
(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:) And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.
Acts 15:13-21
Acts 15:13–21 KJV 1900
And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me: Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
Based upon what Paul wrote, James could have been an Apostle of God - Galatians 1:18-19
Galatians 1:18–19 KJV 1900
Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord’s brother.

Servant

He could have referred to himself as: “James the son of the virgin Mary, brother of none other than Jesus Christ. I grew up with Him and knew Him long before He became famous.” Instead, he refers to himself as a “servant of God.”
